Just a note if you do it yourself, wear latex gloves. If you get those metal shavings in your hands you'll have hell getting them out (don't ask me how I know this). This is especially true of the gunk that is at the bottom and sides of the gearbox. Wipe that stuff out real good and don't get any on uncovered skin.
Same is true for changing tranny fluid.

actually if you bought the truck new, i'd swap the diff fluid after 500~700 miles. the gears are done breaking in and all of the crap that got shaved off during the break in period should be removed with an oil swap. I'd also go to the synthetic fluids. Red line makes some good stuff, I have it in all of the diffs, manual tranny's & transfer cases on all 4 of our dodges... (2 daks and 2 rams).

I did mine at 11000 because I was itching to put my pml cover with a magnetic drain plug on. Now, I just have to drain and fill from now on.

Sorry dude, sounds like you took it in the poop chute. That is a lot of cash for a fluid change. Well better luck next time.

Ouch! Let me see. My cost: 2 qts RoyalPurple 75W90 $17, 3 qts RP 75W-140: $25, 1 tube red Axle-RTV: $3 (good for 3 changes) for a total of $45 in materials. 2 hours on a lazy Saturday + 1 trip to the recycling center. I already have the tools and drain pains. Dealers around here want $240-$300 for the diff service. So $200 is not all that high.

Roger...
