Default Greetings and a Question

Hello to the forum.

I've been lurking here for about the past month after buying my new '06 1500 QC Sport - 5.7 HEMI. Lots of good info, tips, and tricks available here. I wish I would of joined back when I had my 03 Ram 1500.

Anyways, I decided to finally register and get involved with the conversation after having a strange experience with my truck and aftermarket components.

Here's my question:

I picked up a K&N KN63 Aircharger intake (intake tube that replaces the stock resonator and high flow filter). The kit was listed as for an '06 Ram 5.7l. The intstallation involves disconnecting the negative battery lead, removing the stock resonator and filter housing, removing the intake temperature sensor and crankcase breather from the old resonator, installing the temperature sensor and crankcase breather to the new intake tube, installing the new tube and filter, and then reconnecting the battery. Pretty much a no-brainer for installation.

I do this, take the truck out for a spin and it runs like crap. Decreased throttle respose, engine surging, a high idle RPM, and causing some odd transmisson shifting. I figure that this may be just due to the trucks engine management system readjusting for the new airflow, so I run aroud for about 250 miles while keeping a close eye on things to see if the situation gets any better. It doesn't. Over the 250 miles, I repeatedly checked all that I could regarding the intake for tightness, leaks, yada-yada.

After getting to the point of being really worried about the health of the engine, I removed the K&N and reinstalled all the stock components. The truck now runs like a top again.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else with an 06 Hemi has seen anything like this. I had a thought that maybe the different airflow didn't agree with the '06 MDS system.

Any help is appreciated.

OK, I may have partially answered my own question. From lookling at some other info on intake and/or exhaust mods, a PCM reset is suggested to let the PCM re-learn the F/A map for the new intake airflow. The only problem is that there are several methods for this mentioned from just disconnecting the battery negative lead for 15 minutes to pulling the PCM fuse and holding the ignition key in either run or start for a period of time. I've tried all of the above and am still having poor engine performance with the K&N.

Anyone have an answer on reseting a PCM on an '06 HEMI or any advise on whats going on here.

An intake mod is a pretty common thing from reading around, but I havent seen any other mention of the problems I'm experiencing.

Thanks

Try leaving the Battery disconnected for an hour or so. The PCM might have a capacitor backup that needs to fully discharge. Not sure about the Rams, but some vehicles have this.

Yep..............disconnect the battery and leave the ignition key switched to the "On" position, where the lights on your dash would have lit up.
Also, leave your headlights switched to "on" to dissipate any residual battery current floating around.
If this doesn't work.........................[sm=confused06.gif]

Possibly review your instalation.
