4Lo=offroad, why would you race a ram in 4Lo?

Have you/he ever driven it in 4lo? Have you heard how much more agressive teh engine sounds like its working? That's because it is. It multiplies the tourque so much more then normal. I would suggestion doing more then 10 mph, even though it says 20. Definatley wouldn't be pretty if you tried to run a race with it.

I blew up my T-case in 4LO because I was revving the engine with the brake still on... I was braking and revving, not because I was trying to do a break-stand or anything, but because my father-in-law told me to...

Anyways...

In the manual it says not to exceed 40km/h or 25mph in 4-LO... I'll tell you from first-hand experience, that's not entirely accurate. I have gone up to about 70-80km/h in 4-LO, but only for very very short periods of time... 4-LO would be good to get a fast launch, like the first 100meters or something, but you can't change out of 4-LO on the fly... So really there is no point.

4-LO has so much power in fact, that it's not even really that great for launching... When I launch in 4-LO, the truck jerks forward with so much force that the front of the truck lifts up and the front wheels just spin and hop off the pavement...

This is a perfect example of why you have to be extremely careful when buying a used 4WD vehicle. There is always someone who doesn't understand the concept of 4WD, hi lock, lo lock and their intended purposes that tries this kind of nonsense. The only time I put mine in even hi lock is off pavement unless there is snow on the road which is rare here. And even though the manual says you can drive in hi lock at 60mph, I can't think of a situation where I would need to go 60mph in 4WD. Just remember, dad is gonna be pissed when he has to plunk out a couple of grand for a new transfer case. It will be the same reaction my dad had when I took his Bronco out as a teenager and one of my genius friends broke one of the cheap plastic manual hub ***** trying to force lock it with a wrench. Guess what....dad was pissed.

Story Time-

Mind you that i live in ND, but an example of this where you would need to do this would be earlier this fall right before winter we had 20 degree temperatures and a rainstorm swept thru the state (lots of aftermath damage)..... And me and my buddies had to go right thru the heart of it on our 200 mile trip back to college, so we decided to caravan (3 seperate vehicles). We were on I29, and it started sprinkling slightly about 70 miles into our trip......i slowed up a tad but little did i know there was black ice galore (usually have a nack for being able to spot this dangerous stuff, but it was slick and practically invisible) i went around a slight corner almost lost it in 2WD, the *** end completely broke loose...i can about imagine what the cars behind me were thinking seeing a 1/2 ton dodge ram pert near sideways down the interstate at 60 mph!!! I managed to straighten it out....probably the best out of control correction of my life as a driver hahaha. Then the freezing rain hit, you could literally ice skate down the interstate NOT EXAGERRATING!!! Traffic had slowed to about 40 MPH by this time, and it was 4WD for about 120 miles at speeds from 30-50 MPH. Really sucked down the gas, but boy am i glad i had that 4WD....i think i counted 43 cars (and trucks/semi's) in the ditch in just those 120 miles. I have pics on my phone of my truck, it was covered in a solid layer of ice. Icicles hanging down every which way, i measured one to be 14" long on one my side view mirrors (glad those things are heated)!!! Actually looked pretty damn cool!!! The next day after the storm let up it took me 2 f*cking hours to get into my vehicle due to the iced over door sill gaps.

first off...not only is it HORRIBLE to your tranny.....i dont think you could do more than 30-35mph TOPS in 4LO....it shifts every 5-10mph HARD and so by 4th gear you are only doing 30mph approx....doesnt shift into 5th. POINTLESS!.....and its slower than just taking off in 2wd or AWD normal driving.

4HI is a litle more forgiving...still shouldnt use it unless in icy or wet or snowy conditions....you are locking out the axles and both right and left tires are spinning at the same rate even when turning....so in a turn on dry conditions ....you can feel the tires/steering having a hard time....no good.

and 4LO should ONLY be used in muddy/snowy/in a ditch conditions ...and usually you only need THAT much low end grunt to pull someone out or when you are towing something behind you in bad conditions out of a rut.

some of you guyz need to STOP listening to morons on some of these boards.......7/10 people on the net dont know ANYTHING....but yet they preach whatever they learn on the net....right or wrong...they dont know!

+1
..........4-HI is for extra traction at higher speeds (ice, mud, snow, wet, etc.) or if you are going up a very steep hill in the backcountry. For us it is not designed to be left engaged on dry pavement in the first place, 2nd gen or 3rd gen (except AWD models). 4-Lo is when you need the extra power to yank some chevy or ford out of a ditch, pull out a stump, pulling farm machinery around, or for whatever reason really need low end power in mud, snow, etc. If you think you can race your truck in 4-Lo, you should not be allowed to own a 4wd.

anothier tip.. 4 low is effective for towing some one out of thier stuck situation, but you have to have traction, or you will just did your self into the ground, if you have to excead 2000 Rpm, 4 hi is lot more forgiving on the drive train and you still can use it for removing stuck trucks, the best option is a whinch if you can afford it, but as for racing, 2wd get's you thier quicker on a dry surface's and slidding out of control in 4 Hi at higer speeds is not fun, in the winter I drive in 2wd even thow I have 4x4 if I need it, I have seen more 4x4 rolled our stuck in ditchs than 2wd, 4 wd can get you into 4x as much trouble, 4wd is ment for slow speed off road driving..

Four-wheel drive is great, the drawback is it gets you stuck in worst places.

I think you should use 4-Lo and drive in figure 8's.

Or quit listening to idiots and use some common sense.
