truck pulls - hooked my '05 up last night
I see a lot of posts about racing hemis here, but I don't think I've ever seen one about truck pulls.
Last night I went to our local county fair and entered my bone stock QC hemi 4x4 in the 6500 lb. stock class. That was the first time I'd ever pulled a sled with anything, and I learned a few things. A stock ram with stock 20" Goodyears will not make an impressive showing in front of your hometown crowd.
Like I said, I've never pulled a sled, so I really didn't have any idea what to expect. My truck weighted in at just under 5700 lbs., so I was at a huge disadvantage from the beginning.
I signed in, paid my $20, and was entered as the 6th puller in a class of 12 trucks, only 2 being Dodges. When my turn to pull came, I had the tranfer in low, tranny in low, and when the green flag came out, I mashed the pedal and began to throw dirt.
I quickly learned I should have had the tranfer in Hi, tranny in lo, because this would have given me more speed off the line, and the RPM limiter wouldn't have been causing me so many problems. The track was like asphalt, my tires were spinning, and I was over-revving causing the engine to go from 5000 rpm to 3000 rpm and back to 5000 again. I couldn't compensate fast enough so I only pulled 122' - not bad for a bone-stock truck in my opinion. Plus, I did beat out 2 Chevys that had 33" off-road tires.
Now I've got the bug. I'm ready to buy a POS truck just to build a motor, tranny, and driveline for pulling. I really don't care what the body looks like, I just want to pull that sled down the track as hard & fast as I can!!

if you want the best pulling truck look at a 94-98.0 12 valve Cummins with a manual.
auto's arent realy suited for pulling and infact shifting the auto during the pull is HIGHLY frowned apun since it will not only give you an advantage over manuals that cannot, but you will also drop the tranny and the sled will run over it
but a nicely tuned P7100 injector pump on a 12 valve, 3K gov-sprink kit, 4 inch exhaust turbo back, transfer in 4lo and tranny in 3rd will give you alot of pulling power.
just to give you an idea on how well these diesels pull in stock form, I yanked a 30 foot maple (about a 5-6 inch trunk) right out of the ground with mine, 4 lo, 2nd gear but could have gone with 3rd. run the RPM;s to 2500 and ease on the clutch, wait for 15-20 pounds of boost then light the tires
35# of boost and 1200F on the EGT's later and I had a tree behind me on the ground
