fuel millage, and gauges
hi, the ram isn't mine it's my fathers.he just got a 2002 ram 4.7. i'm a camaro chick myself. that said, i work on cars, and i know that an intake and exhaust can help him with fuel millage. now what is the difference? and is there anything special for these cars? he works for a judge and has to drive him everyday, so he doesn't want anything like my camaro(being loud as he!l) so what is his best option?
he was also telling me that he wanted a engine temp gauge, i told him that he could get a a pillar gauge, i don't know if he likes the idea of that. is there anther option for these cars.

If your dad isnt into mods then he would most like NOT want to do my FIRST choice which would be 4.56 gear... LOL honestly most people will see gains in fuel economey from 0-MPH to 65MPH. If he does allot of city driving then I would say 4.56's are a MUST, they will show a DRASTIC improvment in fuel economey in the city. When you do the math you begin to understand why.... his transmission is a 545RFE with a .67 overdrive team that up with the 4.56's and you get an overall gear ratio of 3.05!
.67 x 4.56 = 3.05
To figure out his RPMs just take the overall gear ratio and do the formula below.
SPEED x OVERALL GEAR RATIO X 336 / TIRE HIGHT = RPM
He will ONLY gain 300 RPMs at 65MPH.... But overall performance and fuel economey will be outstanding.
I sugest these mods in this order:
1) 4.56 gears
2) Electric Fan (Remove Clutch Fan)
3) High Flow "Y" Pipe with 3" Single exhaust out to the tail. Use a high flow muffler that proiduces the tone he prefurrs. A rule of thumb is the louder it is the better it flows.... Do NOT waste your money on Dual Cat Back system.
4) Cold Air Induction system... Make sure you chose a thats gets the engine Non-turbulent, un-restricted Cold air... Not all systems are created equal.
5) JET STREAM SCOOP + POWER WIRE... these two are proven to gain you fuel economey.
6) FAST MAN 68.5 MM throttle body
DO NOT waste your money on Throttle body spacers, tornados, or other forms of snake oil...
You will meat Hank in a second... he is ANIT 3rd Gen Ram... He doesnt own one but he has wealth of UN-experience to share... just give him a minute to post... he will cut and past a mile long responce that is honestly not worth reading... Much of it is common since...but very little you can use with your 3rd gen Ram...
If you have any questions please feel free to PM me, I would like to offer you help in the forums but I already know HANK will turn this into another one of his FLAMEs... I have been around the 3rd Gen Ram everyday for the last 4 years.... Through hands on experience I have learned what works and what does not work...

Hi Kristen. Boy did you ask a wrong question. I would advise using the search up top for fuel mileage. To put in it a nutshell, there is no one mod to do for mileage and exhaust and intake will do nothing more than increase performance some, not mileage. These motors are pretty well designed from the factory to be as efficent as possible. To notice any real increase, you will need to completely re-engineer the engine by going into the heads and so on. My suggestion is if he bought the 4.7 thinking is was a fuel saver, to get out of it now and purchase a Cummins diesel. With a very simple computer modification, you can have a comfortable, quiet truck that will get 27 mpg and still pull up a tree stump. Basically you get what you pay for. The only reason I still have my 4.7 and not the diesel is because I can't stand the screwing the dealerships want to give me on trade-in. A 2500 with the Quadzilla will SMOKE that camaro of yours [sm=burnout.gif]. Don't worry, I like Camaro's. I had four - 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1996. Wanting a 69 to tinker with now but I have too many toys as it is.
If he does keep the truck, he might as well just grin and bear it. Air Ram claims mileage of 20 + or - but look at his mod list. I did a gear swap and it is well worth it. I can't claim improved mileage but the first tank still averaged 17 1/2 mpg and the truck is a lot more responsive. Of course that was with my wife driving. I've been driving all weekend and I'll be lucky to hit 14 mpg.
as far as the gauge, is the factory one not working or is he just looking to upgrade?
