Default 4x4 noob questions

This is my 1st 4x4 and want to make sure i don't screw anything up.

What exactly is the difference between 4hi and 4lo. Is it just the speed u can go, or is there something else????

What exactly is the nuetral button on my 4wheel ****. I can find in the manual how to use it, but am unsure why i would need to use it????

Congrats on your new Ram, 4Hi vs 4Lo... 4Hi would be for say a snowy day around town or the freeway, 4Lo would be for say up in the mountains in some nasty mud or steep climb. You get the idea, the nuetral selection is for putting the truck in nuetral if you had to tow the truck.

Hope this helps, enjoy the new Ram!!!!

DO NOT try to drive around on a concrete surface in 4wd, unless you want an expensive bill. There must be some slip in the tires or you can seriously damage your transfer case. So as mentioned, snow is fine, but not dry pavement. Also, don't try to do a burn out in 4wd. One of our members tried that and puked his transfer case all over the place.

You use 4HI to pull stuck Chevys and Fords
You use 4LO to pull them apart!
My truck has 3.92 gears and 245/70/17s on it. In 4LO the thing feels like the only thing that would stop it is a 90 degree climb.

quadcabhemi...that is hilarious!!!!! perfect analogy!!!!

prerunner...4HI is basically when you dont want to skid out or loose traction. (snow, ice, mud, loose gravel, dirt, etc) 99% of offroad use. approx 55 mph maximum. 4LO is when youre stuck! or someone else is stuck! approx. 15 mph maximum. Much lower gearing than 4HI. There are also different ways of putting your truck into those different gears so be careful when doing so. (refer to owners manual). Neutral is if you ever need to tow your truck.

congrats on owning youre first 4x4. theyre alot of fun!

Here is another quick question....something i read in another thread...just want to see if i am correct on my logic.

4hi just locks in the front axle, but its basically just a limited slip like the rear?????

4lo locks in the front axle and makes it more posi track???????

Or am i wrong and should now go slap myself????

If you have LSD in the rear pumpkin, you still have the normal LSD, the front is an open diff, unless you have a Power Wagon, it has an actual factory supplied locking diff.
When you "lock" it into 4WD, you are connecting the front diff to the back diff via the transfer case, which has a gear reducer in it for 4 low (crawling over and around stuff)
