Gear Swap Question
Ive got a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.7 hemi and a speed auto tranny. I have been doing quite a bit of towing a flat bed trailer and it doesnt pull it that great, not horrible but not good either. It has a 3.55 gear ratio and I was curious how hard it would be to swith the gear ratio to a 4.10 or a 3.92? Changing the gears in the rear wouldnt be that hard, but how do you make the front work if you are in 4x4. Maybe I am confuesd but wouldnt you have to adjust the front ratio too? Maybe it would be to much work to mess with but I would be really interested in changing to a 4.10 if I could. Any help would be great.
Heres another question. Would I have to change the case for the gears or will or will the OEM gear cases work? Also does dodge run a staggered gear set, for instance mine has a 3.55 rear, does that meant the front is 3.55 as well? So would I need a 4.10 rear and a 4.10 front or would the front and rear be staggered? I am clueless on this and sorry if I sound like an idiot. Probably easy stuff, im just not to smart on this stuff. Any help would be great.
You need the same gear ratios in the front and rear if you ever intend to use 4wd again.
Yes, the gears up to 4.56 will fit your stock carriers.
But, let me advise you, gears are for the pros. Not a backyard thing.
I think at least 4.10's if you have 17" wheels with stock tires, 4.56 if you have the 20's.

cool, thanks... I have a buddy that is a mechanic at a chebby dealer and he is going to do the gear thing for me. Is a 4.10 a good enough ratio? I mean the truck will pull, just not as easy as it should. Anyway thanks alot for the info, helps out a bunch.
If you can, get ahold of the proper procedure for these diffs for your pal.
They are different and require different setups than you pal is used to, unless he's done the chrysler diffs.
If you need the procedures from the manual, I can email them.
