why is the speed limited on vehicles

Do you really need to go 100+ in a 5000 lbs+ vehicle?
I think its a little of both tires and safety.
Dont get me wrong......Everyone should feel the top end at least once[sm=badbadbad.gif]

Correct. Tires are rated for certain speeds. The faster you go the more heat is generated in the tires. Your higer end tires are more heat resistant (Z ties).
It is actually for neither. It is to keep idiots that can't handle speed from killing themselves, and thus getting lawsuits for excessive speed. The insurance companies kind of forced their hands on that. The Superchip will raise that dramatically. I have had mine to 125 with no vibration or sway at all, and it still had more. Mine is extremely stable at that speed.

So let me get this straight JRH, you have A dodge, and TWO fords??

Currently own:
'06 Dodge Power Wagon: 4300miles. Too new to pass judgement on DCM.
'04 Ford Mustang Cobra: 30k miles. Fairly trouble-free for a Ford. Mildly modified, quick and fast. Currently none of the Big 3 make a car under $60,000 that can beat it.
'87 Ford Ranger 4x4: Every possible thing has gone wrong with this vehicle. Lifted, winch, many offroad miles, 160k miles total. For Sale
'85 AMC Eagle Wagon 4x4. Dead in the garage waiting for me to get motivated.
Motorcycles and an ATV.
Previously owned:
'97 Ford Thunderbird: Dumped it at 150k miles due to accident/transmission going bad. Was an excellent driving car. Numerous mechanical problems due to poor design. The Cobra was Ford's last chance to redeem themselves with me.
'67 Mercury Monterey. Bought used. Looked nice, 390CI 4bbl. Too beat up to restore. Would buy another one in a heartbeat if restorable.
'65 Buick Skylark Conv. Bought used. Nice car. Never buy a convertible again. Ever.
'58 Ford Fairlaine. bought used. 352CI 4bbl. Built like a tank. Drove like one too.
100 MPH is too fast for most drivers to handle if an emergency arose! (Hell 30-55 mph is too much for some!) I have too many vehicles and several were manufactured to specs of 135 -150 MPH and are equipped and capable of the range. They do not see over 100 very often. My trucks are used as trucks and will on occasion see 80 MPH, they too are equipped for these speeds, tires and all, and most of the time will only see the posted limits.
Don’t know how many times I had had an idiot pass me with a dangerous maneuver and then end up right in front of me at the next exit or stoplight. What a gain!
You guys slow down and enjoy,

I own a 2005 4.7l QC ram and I forget where my speed is limited If its at 108 or 110 (never pushed it past that speed cus i dont want my engine to shut off) but my question is.. why? I know all vehicles are limited but is it for safety purposes or is it because the stock tires would blow up at those kinds of speeds. I still have stock tires on mine and if that is the case then I will need new tires before I buy a chip that will let my truck go past the limit.
