Default Strange Humming Sound!!

There is a strange humming sound that may be comming from the tranny area every time I start the car and even when its on. The car has 30k miles, and nothing else wrong with it. Its an '04 Ram Quad-Cab Hemi. At first I thought it was the alternator, but doesn't seem to be that because it never looses charge. I bought it used so I don't know what maintenance was done on the car. I took it to the dealer and they said they didn't hear a noise!! Bull**** it's obvious!!

What could it be?

Trying to diagnosis a noise without hearing it is near impossible. A noise comming from the alternator to the tranny leaves a whloe lot of parts inbetween that could be the culprit. It could be as simple as a bad idler pulley or as major as a bad bushing in the front pump. Really need to hear it firsthand.

I don't think its the rear diff. The noise comes from the front of the truck.

I got under it today and it sounds like it may be from the tranny. Do I need to change the tranny fluid? I don't know if its been done.
Also, how long are harmonic balancers supposed to last before the rubber begins to come out.

be very interested in the solution. I get a wining sound that seems to be coming from tranny too. I have an '06 4.7 ram though. I am going to check fluid level in the morning. BTY, what is the clip problem someone mentioned for the diff. ?

I checked the tranny fluid today and it looked pretty thinned out. Is a dodge dealer the only place I can get the fluid and filters at?

Check your power steering fluid.
Oh, see if the noise is tied to the compressor. Does it go away when the AC or defroster is off?

For now Id say your best bet would be to drain the system and then drop the tranny pan and check and see if there are any fine metal shavings resting in it. Also what color was the fluid? you said it was thinned out but did it look burn or more brownish like oil or was it a bright pink? It might also be your fly wheel. There is just so many things right there that it could be.

I was going to say you need to give the transvestite the lyrics, and maybe he'll sing instead, but they I realized you meant the truck.

Try a different dealer if it's under warranty. Ask to take a drive with the tech.
