Spare tire access problem- Ram 3500
I haven't had a flat yet and I must be missing something but as soon as I loaded the camper I realized the spare tire tool access hole was blocked. Is there another way to lower the spare tire on these trucks or did the Dodge engineers expect a person to unload their camper so they could remove the spare tire if they had a flat?
Im not sure if they made all the dodges the same for getting to the spare but for my truck the access hole for the tool is between the rear bumbper and my tailgate even if I were to put a camper on it or pull my trailer I could still easily get ot he spare. Again this is for a 1500 but on almost every newer model truck Ive seen whether it be Dodge Chevy or a Ford thats where its been. Dont know if that helped any.......
The handle access is located in the same position on the back of my truck. The problem is the holding tanks on my Lance camper are behind the bed and hang lower than the access hole.
I figured out this solution if someone doesn't have a better idea. I filed off a little of the flat on the square drive end of the extension so that a box end ratchet fits snug on it. The extension can be inserted from under the bed and the offset handle of the sears style ratchet I used made it easy to crank the spare down & up. The surprise was that the 12 pt box ratchet fits nearly perfectly on the square shaft of the extension.
