Default exhaust back pressure

How much is to much? how much is to little? in other words what type of exhaust gives you a free flowing ability but still has enough back pressure that you dont lose hp? is cat back exhuast too free flowing? would 2 free flowing cats be sufficient enough?

First off what year vehicle do you have with what size motor? I always see alot of questions on this site in regards to exhaust systems. Some people ask for a quick cheap system or just go the wrong way about it. The real question is what do want from your exhaust system? If your looking for just a nice sound than a cat back system is fine. Personally I do not believe in cat back at all. Reason being your really not freeing up the engine's back pressure. You still have the manafollds and stock cat's on there. Realize most of your back pressure(turbulance) is in your manafolds to the collectors. One big traffic jam of exhaust. If your looking for better perfomance plus a nice aggresive sound then be prepared to spend some duckits. If you have and 04/05 Hemi god has blessed you with dual cat's. Get rid of the manafolds and switch to Headers. Throw on some high flow cats. Now for the important part the remaining exhust sytem. Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Basanni, Borla who do you pick. 1. Do not go with a universal exhaust because what's good for one is not good for the other. Personally after alot and I mean alot of research the two top of the line(performance/price) exhaust sytems that are perfect for the Hemi are Magnaflow and Basanni. I went with Doug Thorley headers with a 3/8 flange and a full Magnaflow polished system. Be ready that if your gonna do it, do it right the first time cause you are gonna spend some money. In all for my system I spent a little over 1500.00 and that was with my jobber cost. I hope this helps let us know what you do.

Good question-
You've got the idea. It depends on where you want to make more HP. In the midrange or top end.
Many cat-backs are designed for max HP at the top end, at the expense of low/mid-range power.
Headers are not cost effective if you're hardly ever using high revs.

i have a 2004 4.7L dodge ram 1500 QC. (sorry it took so long to answer back. i was on vacation and had no internet access). so headers, high flow cats, and a Magnaflow muffler should do the trick? what if i also wanted a fairly loud truck 2?
