Coil question
Has anyone noticed that the 06 5.7 hemi has coil pack setup that look sjust like the 6.1 hemi setup (just the coil over the plugs, no extra wire)? I was looking at the FSM's between the 05 & 06 and just noticed it. Anyone know if this setup can be retrofit?
I researched just this upgrade. According to the Dodge dealer parts guy I talked to--and we looked up the parts. You'll need a wiring harness, new valve covers, 16 coils (they're a different part number than on the pre-06s), AND, a PCM upgrade (only fire the coils once per cycle vs. 2 times in the pre-06s). Also, the valve covers have some differences that require some retro-fitting to pre-06s. I didn't even bother adding up the costs since it was approaching $1,000 when I said no thanks. While it may be possible to do this upgrade on the cheap, I was looking for the whole 06 enchalada. Instead, I ordered the shorty wires. And, resigned myself to a little bit of wiring under the hood. Other then the mental belief that 06 setup is better than the 05, there's no difference in performance.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking well of the possibilities of scrounging this until you got to the PCM upgrade...that sucks. I was leaning more towards aesthetics on this one. The installation just looks cleaner. I figured it was a phased upgrade that happened over time.
If you were willing to just splice the wiring for the new coils, then the new harness and PCM upgrade wouldn't be necessary. But, you'll still get the double spark per cycle that the pre-06s generate. I was worried that without the 06 harness, the coils might not receive enough charge to produce a full spark. Could be an unfounded fear. However, the cost of the valve covers and the coils is still on the steep-side. Of course if you can get them from a non-dealer source, they could be cheaper. But, a set of shorty wires only cost me $80. With no meaningful performance difference, I learned to love the wires... :-)

Wow! Figured someone would come out with an after market kit sooner or later. But, it's not a whole lot less then the Mopar parts, though I like the composite cover idea--hope it will last though. My only concern is that the description appears somewhat inaccurate/misleading. The 2 sparks per cycle--once on compression and once on exhaust--is driven by the PCM sending signals to the coil. Splicing off the single lead wouldn't change that behavior. You'll still get the 2 sparks. The description seems to imply that won't happen. Also, the coils appear different than the ones I saw on the 06 Ram Hemi's. Maybe I didn't look close enough, but I could swear there were 2 separate coils and separate signal leads for each cylinder. I presume this after market setup would work satisfactorily. I was just looking for a Mopar only setup.

Hey guys, this place is awsome when it comes to service. Talk to "ART" in the parts dapartment . Tell him EDDIE from NY refered you to him. He told me that this system was easy to install if you had the basic knowladge but was honest enough to tell me to just buy the "shoty wires (10.5 mm) ". He would only recomend that kit if you were superchargeing or turbo chargeing your 5.7 to produce at least 400 hp to the wheels. Beleave me , your not going to get that at the rear wheels without doing computer and engine mods. For the purpose of fuel economy He sugjested the short wires . My set up is the long tube headers , truedual with 50 flowmasters ,cai, superchip and the shorty wires. My friend had the same set-up installed on his 2003 and the short wires were sufficient. I have seen them work without a problem so I just ordered them myself. I'll let you guys know how it goes when there in.
