tranny "issue"?
Hey Guys,
I have an 04 Ram QC with 54k miles on it that I just purchased new about 2 months ago. I'm not sure if this is a problem or just something I caught out of the corner of my eye while driving the other day but I wanted to ask and see what you guys have to say.
I've got the 4.7 and it shifts realatively smooth for a truck but in 4th gear at around 45-50 miles an hour my transmission starts acting a little funny. I'm sorry, I don't know what tranny I have. My RPMs jump from 1600 to 2200 and back and forth. Am I sitting on a shift point? I just find it odd because at a certain point you can feel it trying to decide where it wants to be, 1600 or 2200. If that's 5th gear or overdrive, that's fine but I've just never driven a truck that would change so quickly. I know that may not make a lick of sense but it basically gets to that 50 mph at let's say 1700 rpms and it just can't decide. It's kind of a pain because I find myself right there in town driving most of the time.
Have y'all ever heard/experienced this and do you have any advice.
thanks,
Jake

I have the 4.7 with the 5-spd auto tranny, and I have not experiecned this problem at all.. Might want to take it to your local dealer and have them take a ride with you and see if you can duplicate the problem with one of them in the truck with you so they can see first hand what it's doing.. Just a thought.. Good luck!

I've experienced something similar to this. Like all trucks, the transmission won't shift into overdrive until it reaches 45mph+. With that said, if your throttle is in the right place, and your just above the overdrive shift point, then its very likely your transmission will downshift into 4th gear. Mine does this, but its not like its jumping like a engine with a big cam (up and down in fast spurts.) Mine especially does this if I'm driving up a hill, even with my throttle in the same place. I don't think its a big deal, but if your concerned about it, then have the fluid and filters changed (if it hasn't been done yet), or take it to the shop and see if there are any codes. But I think your trans is ok. Just my $.02
