Default Oil Gauge

First post so please bear with me, but it looks like there is a lot of great info. on here.

I have an '02 Ram 1500 Quad Cab with roughly 77000 miles and other then eating tires due to alignment problems from day one and having to recently replace a drive shaft u-joint I haven't had any real issues with the truck. However, this morning my check engine light came on and I noticed the oil guage would drop about halfway to all the way down (as if the engine was cut off) and then come back up to normal. It wouldn't stay down any longer then a few seconds but it did it several times within about a 10 to 15 minute time frame. I checked the oil level when I got to work and it showed normal.

Any ideas on what might me going on? I thought maybe the oil pump or a bad guage, but not sure.

I would check the codes to see if the PCM registered anything. If your still under warranty I would just take it in to have it looked at.

I would also check the connection for the oil pressure sending unit for corrosion and/or crud in the socket connection too.

Of course, you have already verified the obvious, ie, sump is full of oil? Seems stupid, but one time I had a oil filter that developed a stiff part on the gasket--Ford Contour where the filter was 1 inch from the exhaust pipe--and leaked out to the point where the pickup tube must have been starved for oil. This all happened within the span of 1 tank full of gas.

That is actually going to be the first thing I am going to check. From what I have read it doesn't sound like it is going to be exactly easy to get to. If you have any suggestions on the best way to get to it I am listening.

Thanks in advance.

That being the sending unit.

Actually it was the "Check Gauges" light but I had the computer scaned anyway and it showed everything was okay which is leading me to believe a bad gauge or the sending unit.
