The check engine light means that the trucks computer received a signal that was out of spec. The yellow light is not normally a serious internal ptoblem, usually means your running dirty. The red light is more serious and you should not drive very far. Go to AutoZone or similar vendor and have them scan the codes. They do it for free. They have the ability to reset the computor but that does not fix the problem.

My light came on the first time a month ago. The kid who cam out with the code reader was able to determine imediately that is was loss of vacume in the gas tank. Lucked out, it was a loose gas cap. Tighten the cap, cleared the code and back on the road.

Important for everyone. At any service, have your guy scan pending codes. The computers are getting that good that they will measure changes in the operation prior to throwing a code. Even if there is nothing off by much, it may effect power and mileage or predict future problem.

Do not spend money on a reader. Turn you ignition on and off 3 times in a row (do not start, just on to off position). Then any codes stored in the computer will show up in the odometer display. Post your code and we can tell you what the code means.
