1000 miles update after gears, lift and tires
Ok, so after this weekend will be 1000 miles on my truck after I installed a leveling kit and add-a-leafs in the rear. The lift has been good so far, except that I would not recommend running 35x13.50x18 tires on only a leveling kit. The front is cranked almost 75% and still rubs when turning in reverse. Next time I'll get 12.50 tires. The gears have been more of a problem than I thought they would be, but nothing that is not fixable. I installed Genuine gears front and rear and the rear whines on deceleration which is annoying. The rear was also R&R'ed in the first 500 miles of the gears being installed because I neglected to install the tone ring for the ABS and speedo on the ring gear. It's a good thing it came apart though, because the doner axle I used had a ton of metal shavings in it when I got it, and I never cleaned it out until the second time. Genuine gears will never be used in any of my trucks again. They are just too noisy, or more than stock, which gets annoying. I'll go with some Yukon gears instead, at least they claim to be quiet. Something VERY intersting that we found on the second disassembly had me worried at first, so I'll make a new post for just that. What we found was that the clip for the stock LSD had become lodged between the carrier of the diff, and the passenger side bearing cap. This caused it to wear a grooved in the cap, and making a huge mess of metal shaving in the housing. It took a solid hour and a half to clean it out and 2 cans of brake cleaner. I'll make another post with pics soon. The Detroit True trac has met all my expectations so far. Even on the street with the MTZ tires I can fell them both grab on a hard launch.
All in all, the new mods to the truck work well. Now I'll I need is some snow...
