super chips
When you Super/Turbo chargeit's not like dropping a V-10 and dumping the gas load not to mention the weight of the motor....
I did some reasearch and found that there are Paxton units that can be had for around 6K, the gains are not too impressive with some 60HP but I figured if I tookit over to my buddy's place we could dino-tune it to get at least 80 with a few extra tricks...
I think I'll wait till I rack some more miles on the truck, I'm with less than 6K on the clock...

I just installed a superchips in my 02 Ram1500 4.7L. I had a full tank of 87 octane so right now I'm using the 87 setting. After 250 miles I got about 1/2 - 1 mpg better. I did not baby the truck or drive any differently. Based soley on this fact, granted it's only 250 miles, if I get 1 mpg better, in the long run the tuner will pay for itself. I'm hoping to see a little better results once I fill up on 93 octane.
Also just a bit of info for you guys. Think aboutHP to wieght ratio. Divide the weight of your truck by the amount of HP your engine has. This gives you your Pounds per Horse Power. Realistically speaking adding another 20Hp over the entire weight of the truck probably won't gain you much performance. However, the more HP you make the easier it is to move down the road. So to me the money on a programmer is worht it.

Nowdays, horsepower is just another number. In the past it was used to calculate the theoretical top speed of a car, but with today's high speeds, air and roll resistance are equally important. What you really should be concerned with is torque. Torque is what makes you take off from a stoplight fast and torque is what allows you to do 75mph with a 10,000lb trailer.
As for the turbo mileage comments, with such a marginal increase in fuel consumption, isn't it possible that this is due to the engine being more broken in? As you add miles to an engine, there is less friction from the piston rings and less gas is needed to make the crankshaft spin. The reason a turbo helps performance is because it compresses the air coming into the engine, thus making the air denser (and colder). Colder air allows for more fuel to be used in combustion. Since the cylinder size is constant, you are getting more bang per combustion cycle and more power. So, really, the idea behind the turbo is to use more fuel, not less.

damn you guys really know how to ruin a guys morning. was all ready to order a tuner and after reading this I think I will hold off. was looking more for gas mileage and the ability to change tire size from winter tires to summer tires. will the tuner allow me to change wheel size, I have 20s and want to change to 17s??????
You don't have to worry about rim size. Superchips lets you adjust the tire diameter in .250" increments so it doesn't matter what size rim you run. Also, I just bough a superchips on Monday, I've noticed about a 1mpg gain so far. It's probably to early to tell if it will stay that way. Even if it increases it by 1mpg, eventually it will pay for itself
