Im an Idiot
With the new key setup, make sure you get new shocks. It was easy to max out the stock shocks with the stock keys. Then I added 3" add-a-leafs to the rear, and new keys for the front. The ride isn't too bad, but the only thing I don't care for, is that when the front is in full droop (like on a hoist), the front CV boots contact the lower control arms. So if you were doing some offroading enough for the front to extend fully, make sure you get short enough shocks that it won't allow this. For the Bilstein 5150 shocks that I bought, the only ones that would work for what I needed gave me a little to long of travel. Oh well, live and learn. maybe next year I'll get a full 6" lift and do it right.
I think with the keys you dont have to worry about your cv boots, its not the same as turning your torrsion bars up, they make them so you dont put to much tension on the front end, your not cranking them up just putting bigger keys in, thats what i got from reading anyways
I really want to do this install for the longest time. I have the new keyways but I hear its justas good turning the adjustment screws. I was close enough to doing it when I bought new shocks, some decent rancho's. Anyways, what shocks did you guys use when you did it and what steps did you take to turning the torsion bar adjusters?? I want to get a new set of offset wheels and sposively they're not going to work without a front end lift.
I would use the keys, if you crank the torrsion bars up it puts a lot of stress on the front end, with the new keys it pushes them up without the stress, thats why you pay $200 for them, if it wasnt better then you could just turn the screw
me and my buddy have the exact same trucks i went with the keys and got 2 in of lift, he turned his bars up and got 2 in. there is a major diference in ride with just turning the bars up it makes the front end very stiff and feels like the front end wants to snap. on mine with the keys it is not nearly as bad but is a worse ride then stock. also we both have the same shocks bilstiens that are longer then stock and had to have the trucks alligned.
