Changing from 20's to a 17 inch tire?
I have an '04 Ram 4x4 with the stock 20 inch wheels. I am going to put on stock 17's and want to know what is the biggest tire I can put on without messing with the suspension? I was thinking about putting on 315/70/17 BFG All-Terrain's, but was worried about rubbing?
My 06 has 265/70/17s there is lots of room in the back not much in the front . Most good tire shops will help you with your question Ilike Les Schwab stores ,good luck .
The biggest that you will be able to fit without lifting/leveling the front end will be 33". I just put Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's on my 02' 1500. They are 315 / 70/ 17 but I put 2" larger torsion bar keys on and leveled the front end. The only rub that I get is at full lock on the stering wheel on the inner wheel well liners, no big deal. If you want to level out/lift the front end with the torsion bar keys, you can get them on Ebay for about $80. Don't forget to get a front end alignment though. Good luck!!.
I had an 04 and crank the torsion bars to tighten up the suspension. It seemed a little sloppy stock. You need to jack the vehicle upwhen you do this. Measure from the center of the hub to the fender before and as you go. It took me several trys to get it right whereI wanted it. I would crank then get in the truck and ride it down a washboarded road. Take the time to get it right. You don't want the filling in your teeth coming out. I actually had a better ride thanstock when I was done. Not so mushy. It sits with the nose slightly down but not as bad as stock. Leveling it was way to harsh. I run it down dirt roads up to 70mph. You have to cover some distance to get to your hunt spots here in Wyoming. It's also hard to keep up with my brother.I really on my truck to get me out of trouble when off road. I also want it to function.Rubbing pisses me off. I have run both Goodyear MTr's and Cooper mudders in 285/70's on 17" stock wheels. The only time they hit was when I backed up with the wheel cranked all the way over in a very deep ditch in the mountains when I was hunting. Even then, they barely hit. Not like my dads Chevy that rubs his 285sgoing forward because of his 0 offset wheel. He even had to trim his bumper. It rides like a tank cause his bars are over cranked. The wider 305's and 33x12.50 will rub. Changing your offset will make the tire rub also. All these new trucks come with positive offsets. The factory 04 is 25mm for the 17s and 30mm for the 20's. When your done putting tires on and adjusting your torsion bars get a good wheel alignment. If you mostly stay on the street the other 33's will probably be fine in the all-terrains. Tight turns on slopes could create some slight rubbing. If you have thought about torsion keys, DON'T. A true suspension lift is the only way to go if you want to clear larger tires. Just wish they didn't cost so much. Hope I helped you out!!!
tater, im currently running that combo of wheels , tires and i have the torsion keys and dont have any rubbing problems, lifts are good but if your only looking for 2" or leveling out the truck the keys arent bad. as far as ride, mine rides fine like a truck not like the mushy car like it did. my actually rides better than my buddies f-250 that thing is a brick house!
