Default instrument cluster?

I have a 2003 ram 1500 with the 4.7. Today while i was driving, all the gauges died! One by one the gauges dropped and all off the warning lights came on. The odometer died and says no bus. The truck runs and drives just like normal and the lights and turn signals still work. The wipers do not work. Has anyone else had this problem? Also the dealer wants $1100 to "possibly fix the problem by replacing the instrument cluster"
The truck only has 90,000 miles and otherwise has no problems. If anyone has any advice, please help!!!!!!

try going to a "pick-a-part" and seeing if you can pick up a cluster yourself.
if not, trouble shoot the wires. get a diagram from a haynes, or which ever you prefer, and start tracking the wires and using an Ohm meter to check them out.

I have an 03 1500 with 54000 mi and the cluster is failing and causing the shift interlock to overheat. I have to it replaced. I bought a cluster off ebay but the mileage does not match and it had the Sentry engine disabling built in it. So I sent it back. Do I have to buy a refurbished one from the dealer on an exchange or can I take a used one and have it reprogrammed to have the correct mileage. I don't want to do anything illegal. I will be trying to sell it.
