Paint
NYPANAMA I am from CT. New London area. No price quotes. I remember bringing a part to someone like Maco about 6 years ago (tiny little visor thing to go over the windshield of my ranger) and it cost almost $200. And they did a crap job. My dad, when he was the owner of my jeep, brought it to a shop to get the windshield frame replaced and to get repainted. Total hack job (hence, in pieces), and there are paint runs all over. Andcharged him $500- 600 I think. Not a whole lot to paint on jeeps. Just seeing the crappy jobsthat somepaint shops do and what they charge makes me nervous. I know there are plenty of reputable paint shops, just a matter of putting out the big dollars. Ben D, that was a funny story.I think I would have snapped.
the guys who did my truck charged the dealer $8K, they took the truck down to the dipped primer, then wetsanded, shot two coats of red iron primer, 1 flexcoat, then 3 base and two clear. I have to say the brilliant white on my QC is awesome & flawless. When I take it in for service the service manager always comments on how good it looks compaired tothe factory paint. When it's parked next to a factory brilliant (bright) white it's an unbelievable difference.
here'ssome pics from about five days after they did the re-shoot:

Yeah the guys really did a bang up job, took them 10 days to do the whole thing, 3 days to do the passenger side doors, then when I got it back that side looked pristine compaired to the rest, so I told the dealer it looked bad with one side looking great and the other looking bad. After much discussion, (they didn't want to suck up the costs, and arguing with the manager of the dealership) they finally decided to let them do the rest of the truck. The cool thing was the shop already knew what was going to happen and had already secured the necessary materials and left a 7 day slot open "just in case". I had already seen the truck before they brought it back to the dealer so I was prepared to battle. He (the painter) basically told me what to expect, and what to demand, as Dodge could not warranty the work he had done, and I'd need to get the whole truck reshot to keep the warranty on the rest of his work. It truely looks awesome in person, you would not believe the difference in mine and another bright white sitting on a lot. At firstI thought it was the wrong color but he showed me the paint and the numbers in the book (DODGE paint numbers) and explained to me how they paint in the factories vs. how the paint should be applied with sanding between coats, flexcoats, and the proper methods of doing clear.I kid you not my paint looks like it's 12 inches deep, if you hold an object next to it you get a deep crystal clear reflection with almost no distortion, basically a mirror image. They did a GREAT job.
It's a place called Ray's in Del Rio TX, believe it or not the dealer gave me a loaner while it was being fixed. Basically mine was new so they had no choice. it was the only white Quad Cab they had, they tried to talk me into another truck, or to wait and see if they could get one from another dealer before they paid to have the work done. Then the manager found out thtat the factory would reimburse them for any paint work on the vehicle so they decided to go ahead with it. Truthfully I was shocked that they did it, however it was an 06 and they had a bunch of them leftover and alot of 07's on the lot already so they were trying to move them out quick!
How about if I just buff it down to metal myself and send it paint shop prepped they would give me huge discount on paint job cause seriously how hard is it to take paint off can't be harder than putting it on.
Sick paint man... I definatly agree that repainting is the way to go if you can afford to do it... however, before anyone repaints you should check out The Guide to Detailing under the detailing forum. Thank you MyFirstfor turning me onto that... I actually realized that the paint isn't beyond trying to repair it myself... also, what do you think of the Meguires line of products. I know I can buy the products recommended in the guide but I really didn't want to wait. Products are limited in my area of CT: NAPA, Autozone, Walmart... they all carry the same stuff.
