Toyo Open Country - M/T's - tread wear????
I am looking at a set of 33x12.5R18's ToyoM/T'for my 04 Ram3500 CTD. I was wondering what the tread wear has been on these tires? My last set was Mickey Thompson D**K Cepek FC-II's(33x12.5R17)and these were really nice tires and great wear. I got nearly 60,000 miles on these tires with a good mix of off-road and highway.
ReasonI am looking at the Toyo M/T'sbecause of the 10ply E-load rating as well the aggressive tread for off-road, but I have not heard much on how the tread wear is on these tires. I amalso looking at Mickey Thompson MTZ's as well.
I am opento suggestions onother tirebrands......**EXCEPT- BFG-All-terrian KO or Mud-terrain (tried both and they were lousy for wear - 20,000 miles on these tires)**.
Thanks,
BBM

Hello BigBadMagnum,
I have the TOYO M/T's and they have been great. I have appx. 12k miles on them, and they have hardly any wear on them. I can easily see them making 50-60k miles. They are great tires, and like you, I do drive pretty divided between off and on road. I would recommend them to anyone. Oh I also tow a 28ft. Prowler Camping trailor and a 21ft. boat, and the tires hold up verywell.
As for the MTZ's a friend of mine has them on his Silverado, probably about 15k on them, and they are chunking. By that I mean the knobbies (sp?) on the tires just fly off occasionally when offroad, and they are dry rotting already. IMO not very quality tires, for long lasting durability. Hope I helped some.

Hi BgBluRam
Nice truck Bro.....same style of truck color and sports package as my Laramie 4x4 quadcab CTD. Thanks, for the information on the Toyo M/T's and Mickey Thompson MTZ's.I did more research and there is not much outthere for 33's in a 18 inch rim with the aggressive tread I want. Iwas thinking about getting a leveling kit for my truckand getting 35's but with a higher ride heightwould cause issues with my 5th wheelas I have already flipped the axles on the trailer.
After the research and your comments, I have placed an order for the Toyo's M/T's and they should be in by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I am getting a set of 4 with balance mounting, enviro fee & taxes for $1400 out the door for 33x12.5R18's Toyo M/T's. The Mickey Thompsons were $10/tire more than the Toyo M/T's.

BigbadMagnum,
Before I bought my last set of tires I narrowed my choices down to the Mickey MTZs and the Toyo M/Ts as well.
The Toyo's were generally regarded as the best of the Mud Terrains overall, but also way more expensive.
Then I was turned on to the ProComp MTs...good reviews and better pricing.
I went with the ProComp MT's and so far with about 15K miles I am very pleased.
Regarding tire life, you and BgBluRam must drive easy, because I can't believe a Mud Tire would last anywhere near 60,000 miles...Those Toyo's must be worth the extra cost! Good choice.

Hey! Thanks for the compliment, you must have one sweet truck too! I want a CTD! Just have to wait for the $$$ and a goodreason to trade mine in on one, like a 5th wheel!

Wow, where did you buy them from? I bought my 35x12.5/17's for $1180.00 OTD, perhaps it's because of the wheel diameter?

As for the ProComp MT's I have heard mixed reviews, it's always good to hear that someone is pleased with a product though, makes me wonder what some people do to these tires, like maybe use the M/T on hard terrain at high speeds or something. I don't know about driving easy, I didn't think it mattered how you drive, mileage is mileage right? But I do drive the speed limit the majority of the time if that's what you mean.
That is $1400 CDN so about $1050 USDout the door including taxes (13%), shipping & freight, enviro fee, balance and mounting.I think there is a difference in cost based on thetire diameterand availability as there is not muchon the market for M/T tiresespecially 33's R18's.I went with the Toyo's as the Tire dealer in my home town deals with Toyo's and even Mickey Thompson andfunny thing for the MTZ's were $10/tire more than the Toyo's.
The 35's look good on your Truck BgBluRam. The 35's look good on the 3rd generation Rams. I am going to see if I can fit 35's on my truck with the rims but from what I recall with my 33x12.5R17's D**K Cepek FC-II's there was only about 1/2 inch of room in my front fenders. So I think they will rub. If I did not have the damn 5th wheel (axles already flipped) I would not hesitate to get the leveling kit. But I need my truck to function for the gear I have.
The ProComp...look good but I could not find the correct size that I need for my MKW-26 rims and would fit without getting a leveling kit. Also, I talked with my dealer and they would be highly priced compared to Toyo's as he does not directly deal with ProComp.

I've had my toyo's for a few weeks now, cant say much about the ware yet, but they ride really nice. Most people think that because of the big tread they are really loud when driving, well atleast for me they are surprisingly quiet. Overall I'm very happy with them, but we'll see how long they last.
I didn't realize the Toyocarried the 'E' load rating. I was looking at the Nitto Terra Grappler in 305/70/17 for my 2500.They also have the 'E' rating you are looking for.
