Default Key Fob

So I buy my new (used) truck and the tight wad dealer only gives me one key? I said only one key and they said yes its all we have? All you have I say. You have boxes of them in the parts dept. Yes but you have to buy another if you want one. Ok so I check on a key.
Mine is a 4 button one because I have auto start. $175 plus $45 to program it?? Holy crap
is that a ripoff or what? I didnt buy one just yet but $45 dollars to program it when all they probably do is put it in the ignition start the truck turn it on and off 5 or 6 times without starting the truck and its programed. Dealers are such rip-offs anymore. They said they dont have keys without the buttons either to manually unlock it and start it? Unreal..

Pretty much just went thru the same thing, but with a 3 button key. Had to pay 148 for the key and then 35 for programing it. You can not program a new key without having 2 additional keys. Me and the salesperson tried after they cut the key. They need to hook the truck up to a computer and program the key. Yes, it sucked but there was no other way to get around it.

You need 2 FACTORY programmed keys to program a 3rd. I don't even think you can program a 4th key using a Factory original and one that you programmed yourself., if you follow?
Buy a key online and make sure it's NEW as you cannot re-program used internals. they only get programmed once and then are stuck with that vehicle for life.
So, get a key and have the dealer program it this way you will have 2 FACTORY programmed keys as they use the Starscan tool and reset the ecu to allow the added key. Then you will be able to buy a cheap chipped key with no locl/unlock buttons for a spare($20) and program it yourself for a spare.

Only bad thing with buying a key online and having someone else cut it is that it's not warantied if the cut is wrong. So then you would have to buy another key again.
Best bet is to just bend over and have the dealer do it. Then you Know your getting ripped for $220+tax and nothing more. If they F-up the cut, it's on them at that point not you. Also, i wouldn';t allow a key that gets stuck when turning. if it catches and you have to wiggle it or it's not a smooth turn. Complain and don't accept it as that's not how it's suppose to be. I don't care what they tell you. They prob would say..oh..that's cuz it's new and it needs time. Wrong. Means they cut it wrong. New vehicles don't have that problem plus your ignition cylinder is more worn so there should really be no issue's.

Even though it is a "used" truck. Me and the sales manager/gm of the dealership would have a problem. They just got a good chunk of change out of you for the purchase of the truck and they can't set you up with a second key???? For them of course the key isn't $175 their cost. They should eat the cost of it since it probably runs $40 their cost at the most. Even selling a used car if they are a reputable dealership they should be kissing your a$$ to make you happy since you just gave them a decent little commission check for the week. Just my thoughts on the matter.

^^^ yeah, i would have said cancel the deal, i'm no longer interested. then they would have def got a new key.
i always check everything over before I sign. the dealer is at your mercy at that point because they already paid for registration and went through all the leg work and YOU have no obligatations at that point (other than any fees that they paid like Reg and title fee) but you can just walk away. Most people don't realize that!
My father did that on a brand new vehicle. Once they registered it, it's considered used even if it never leaves the lot. They called him the very next morning and said they would write him a check for $2k if he bought it because they would have lost even more than that if they had to sell it as used.
little FYI for those that ever want to buy anew vehicle. make sure you ask if it's ever been registered. generally they will try not to tell you. Especially check for original owner only warranties as they are lost when this happens.

Never buy a vehicle without a spare tire, full set of keys, owners manual and of course a carfax report lol. I walk out on the deal everytime they tell me some crap like that. Works like a charm.
