Default Transmission Failure

I have a bit of a brain teaser for you people ..

I have a 2005 1500 qc 4x4 with the 5.7 hemi.. I had a transmission service done some 2000 kms plus or minus.. My transmission since then failed and its estimated at just over 3k .. When I took the pan down to change the filters I was confront by A very very loose filter and when the retaining screw was taken out the filter fell into the pail.. I had purchased a new replacement filter and put it back in correctly .. The one that was replaced by a mechanic had a rubber seal on it and thhe one that I just purchased was metal. The metal one holds the filtervery tight and the rubber one doesnt .. Now where in the hell did that rubber oring come from if all the filters ive seen for my model trans. come with a metal oring?? Was the rubber one from a different model or factory ring ..

OK first things first.
I have done 3 pan drops and fluid changes with both filters to my Hemi, with the same transmission you have.
I have NEVER come across a rubber "O" ring seal for the large flat transmission filter.

Second.......are you still getting this inspection and estimate of $3000 done, by the same people you suspect of puting the rubber "O" ring in place?

Third.......I know for a fact that if this seal isn't done correctly and the filter isn't snug, all kinds of codes are thrown and also the transmission changes and slips and stuff when you try to engage a gear.
I've even read of a truck stalling at lights, due to the incorrect fitment of this "O" ring seal.

The seal is as you say, a small round plastic/rubber coated piece of steel.
No solid rubber "O" ring here.
The flat filter fits very snugly into it and will suport itself easily, even without the retaining bolt being fitted. The fit it that tight!
There is also a correct proceedure of fitting the seal first, then pushing the filter into it and definately not fitting the seal to the filter then pushing the whole lot into the valve body. This seal is that important to get right, that a disclaimer is usually in the replacement filter box as a precaution.
If that filter has not been installed correctly, this might just be the only problem you have?
A re-instalation of the filter wth a correct seal and new fluid, might be all you need??? Not $3000 worth there I can assure you.
If the shop can't show you real damage to your traansmission, I'd personally do a fliter and O ring seal change with fresh fliud myself and try it?
Thats small change compared to the 3 grand they want to sort it all out.

Ok Al

Your the first one thats discribed my tranny problem to the letter.

First of all I have the rubber/plastic O-ring from the mechanic in Sask. that did the first fluid/filters change. I know that theres a metal O-ring that is suppose to go into the transmission but I wasnt there for the instal, He was a licenced mechanic so why the hell should I have to stand over his every move right ? lol..

Second the Transmission shop where my truck is now getting a TOTAL rebuild done worth $3300.00/tax included is not the same place that originally changed the first filter..
My trannny is cooked beyond belive because of him and that o-ring and because its sitting in a shop its not working or taking me to and from work..

Third Yes my truck would stall at intersections or would make funny sounds driveing down the road or miss shift or even miss geasrs totally.. Near the end I lost both 1st and 2nd gears third took it al and man it let me know it wasnt happy .. The only error codes that came up was "impropper gear ratio first gear" and I had one for third gear near the end.

I wish I could just do a filter change but its too late now its fubar I was at the tranny shop yesterday and saw the damage and guess what they found on a filter? the rubber o-ring for the first filter change and guess who's going top be paying for it all now? Let me give you a hint "Not Me"..

Thanks Al you really did help me out

WOW maximo237.
I'm so so sorry for the nightmare your in bud.
All because of a 2 cents seal.....well that probably isn't true these days....more like $10.

Anyway, sounds like this new transmission shop knows their stuff.
You will have a top notch trasmission at the end of all this.
If you do have some spare cash, as you are going to be billing the other mechanic for the damage aren't you???....buy a new torque converter while your in there and get rid of the Dodge stock unit.
A new converter will increase your performance, as the HP losses will be significantly reduced compared to the stock POS that Dodge put in.
Don't forget...if any crap was at the bottom of the pan when your transmission was popped open, flush all the trans lines and buy a new cooler.
I don't think you can ever trust a fouled cooler no matter how many times it's flushed through.
I hope you get things sorted quickly and your truck back on the road bud.
Seasons greetings.
Al.

Happy you're gettin it fixed proper man and I will refrain from any Sask Mechanic Jokes at this time. If your trans repair comes with a new Torque Converter and it is just an OEM replacement i hope the cost was cheap as you will still have a crappy converter. If the Cost is 400 Bucks that would suck as I have one in my shed that would make a great umbrella stand...LOL.. Seriously though It would be a great time to install an aftermarket One. I got the TCI Breakaway for about 425 delivered to my door Taxes/in and they are widely available in Western Canada. Sure there are other Brands available in the states, but not readily up here like TCI, anyhow just wanted to mention that in addition to what AL said, and it really does deliver more Torque to your wheels.
