If I were not so stuck (see: stubborn) on having a solid-front axle, and could give an independent front suspension 4X4 a chance, I would pick up a Ford F-150 S.V.T. Raptor Super Crew, without hesitation. I love this truck!!!
My truck preferences if I were to go out and buy today:
Half-ton: 2011 Ford F-150 S.V.T. Raptor Super Crew
Three-quarter ton: 2011 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
One-ton: 2011 Ford F-350 Power Stroke, Crew Cab, long bed, FX4 Off-Road
Sorry, I have always been (likely will always be) a Ford guy.

The Raptor is a great off-road vehicle from everything that I've read. Quick, smooth, and swallows high-speed off-roading like no other factory vehicle around. And it's just straight up sexy...Ford absolutely nailed the overall look, in particular the stance.
But you'll note I didn't call it a truck. To me, a truck should be able to haul stuff. With the 5.4, the payload is 1050 pounds. With the 6.2, it drops to about 950. Many cars on the road have similar or higher load capacities. Tow capacity is so-so at 6000 pounds.
I bought a truck so I can haul stuff. If I needed a vehicle to go do desert running, the Raptor would be my ride. I thought seriously about buying one until I saw the payload. 2-3 people and some bags in the bed and you're maxed out on payload. 2 people and a trailer with a 500 pound tongue weight and you're maxed out. I need more than what the Raptor is rated for.
A couple weeks ago I moved. I was towing a 5300 pound car hauler (2100 for the hauler, about 3100-3200 for the car on it), and I had about 900 pounds of stuff spread between the trailer, the bed of my truck, and the back seat. I estimate the tongue weight of the car hauler was in the ballpark of 500-600 pounds. I'm about 200 pounds. I'd have been WAY over the payload capacity of the Raptor.
The Raptor is a great vehicle, but it just doesn't have the utility that I need.

I like the truck, but no different than the SRT was it is built for a small market segment.
