Default 2012 65RFE and 66RFE

I just wanted to share some info that I heard about these new trannys. Especially for those of you who are ordering new 2012 1500 pickups. Unless I heard wrong, it was confirmed to me today that the 65RFE is just a reprogramed 545RFE with the same gear ratios but using the second prime as a gear. I did read about this on another forum so I asked about it today and it was confirmed. The new 66RFE is a 545RFE housing with the good 68RFE gear ratios but will only be available in the 2012 Hemi 2500 and not the 1500 truck. IMO, the new 65RFE is no different than the 545RFE except that you don't have to manually shift the new one to use all six. I'm hoping that this info is wrong but I doubt it...sorry for the bad news. Maybe there's a chance that the 66RFE will work in our 1500 Hemis with little modifications to our existing programers. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

65RFE and 66RFE

The next six speeds derived from the 545RFE were the 65RFE and 66RFE, created for 2012 models. The 65RFE was initially used with V8 versions of the Ram 1500, Durango, and Grand Cherokee, while the 66RFE was reserved for the Ram 2500 V8. The transmissions are similar in basic construction, but differ in duty rating; for some of the possible differences, see the 68RFE page. (Gearing not yet available but believed to be identical to 68RFE.) Pickuptrucks.com claims that the 65RFE will not have six forward gears in regular mode, only in ERS/AutoStick mode; and will keep current ratios. Some sources claim that the 65RFE will use the same gears as the 545RFE (but with prime used normally), others that it will use the same gears as the 68RFE. Most agree that the 66RFE will use the 68RFE gearing.
