New RAM owner! Need winter advices
#11
Hey all, thanks for your replies. Like I said, I already have 20" winter tires, they are sold for 250$ /ea CAD. They came with the RAM.
Wintercat Radial SST
They look pretty good but I realize that everyone in this thread recommends going with 17 inches. Not sure if I should ask the dealer to have 17" inches now..
I have received the price for 20" steel wheels >>> 127$ CAD /ea

If you already have the tires then just stick them on the factory wheels. The plasti-chrome is going to hold up pretty decently. After one full MN winter (which was exceptionally long and snowy) my stock wheels still look 100%. Sure, the 20" snow tires might not be quite as capable as narrower 17" tires, but they will be 1000% better than the crappy stock Goodyears.

I was wondering if something is wrong with MPG on my truck:
Year - 2011
Model - RAM 1500 Sport 3.92 gears
Engine - 5.7 HEMI
Highway percent - 15
City percent - 85
Location - East Coast
Octane - 87
Miles on truck - 11k
MPG - 10.2
Mods - None
I am reading the official mpg thread and everyone seems to have at least 15mpg and up. Is there something wrong with my truck?
Thanks for help.

For the winter tires, you already have the 20" tires. So finding them isn't an issue. You can either sell them on Kijiji, then buy 17" rims and tires. Or just put the on the stock rims, and use them for the winter. Maybe buy a nicer 20" for you summer tires come spring, if you so desire.
While 17" tires would be a little better, a 20" winter tire will be great in the snow with 4wd Auto, or 4wd Lock.
For the gas mileage. Two things come to mind. First, the gas stations are now putting their winter additives in gas. This will hurt MPG. Second, since you just got the truck, I am assuming you are getting on it a little too much, most of us do when we first get the HEMI.
Lay off the gas a little, cruise at a slower speed, you should see 15-17mpg, but don't expect much better. After all, it is a full size, 400hp pick up truck.

That is what I did, using stock rims with my 20" winter tires. I might buy nicer rims for summer.
I am already going easy on the gas pedal I don't think thats the problem. I was wondering if there are any must have mods for the 2011 rams? Also, I am using 4x4 auto for the first times since we have snow for a couple days, I guess this is hurting mpg a lot? Or there is not much difference than with 4x2.
Thanks a lot.
