Hi Gents and Ladies

I'm brand new to possible Ram ownership so please bear with while I educate myself.

I'm sooo close to signing on the line for a 2012 5.7l hemi. I've been torn between the very pretty ram and the f150 ecoboost with the condo for a backseat.

The thing I'm having the most difficulty with is the claimed gas savings with the ecoboost. .....But the ram is so...well,,,pretty.

I understand that the Ram cycles down to less cylinders on highway driving, which I do alot of. Is 80-90 k considered hwy driving or does it only happen at 100kph or more?

Finally, I'm petrified that as soon as I sign, Dodge will annouce their version of this so called turbo boosted ecoboost thing, and then the resale of my hemi down the rd will crash.

BTW. I don't do a lot of towing, so we don't need to factor that into the equation. Before you ask why I want such a beast then, I will tell you I don't know, I just do ...OK haha

I don't think you will save much on gas. Real word maybe 1-2mpg.

They are both full size pickups. Full size pickups get bad mpg. If you are okay with that, buy the one you like best. Which sounds to me like it's the RAM.

 

If you`re worried about resale value, you should be. I dont care what you buy, they ALL loose bigtime resale value. The only value you`ll keep is by keeping the vehicle until its ready for the scrap yard, thats the ONLY way you`ll win. So if you`re worried about resale value, dont buy a brand new one. If you`re worried about which truck to buy, visit ALL the forums and do some research on what problems all the trucks have, that should give you some idea what you dont want. I can tell you this, ford has alot of issues, but i`ll let the forums/people speak for themselves.

 

ECO BOOST = very high price to pay when it breaks, and it WILL...!
Take a motor thats already maxed out, then add a turbo to it, its like a grenade with the pin already pulled.

 

Thanks for the responses. More research has revealed that the 2013 Ram will have a penastar (?) motor which is Dodge's version of Ecoboost. You can get it in the Hemi version I believe.

Nay! never buy the first year of an engine... wait a couiple years for bugs to be fixed.

The Pentastar motor is a 3.6L that will have been out for over 2 years by the time it shows up in the 2013 Ram. The 3.6L will not have a turbo on it so I am not sure if comparing it to the Ecoboost is an apple to apple comparison.

 

Do not get a v6 in a ram. Underpowered dog. My hemi has prolly 410-420 hp with mods and gets 20+ mpg with 3.55 gearing.

 

confusion is setting in. I have to make sure I make the right decision cuz its a lot of dough

For the 2012 model year the 1500 Ram's have 3 engine choices, the 3.7L V6, the 4.7L V8, and the 5.7L Hemi V8. The 5.7L is the only engine with MDS which is the system that shuts off 4 cylinders when cruising. The 4.7L V8 does not have the cylinder deactivation feature.

If you are going to wait until the 2013 models come out I would suggest you drive the 3.6L and judge for yourself if it has enough power for you. No one on these forums can tell you the 3.6L 1500's will be underpowered because they have never driven one of them. They will have over 300 HP which is close to 100 HP more than the outgoing V6.
