Change Oil Light
What parameters does the computer use to make this light come on? The book says it can come on and different intervals based on how you drive. I bought a demo that had 5500 miles on it. The oil had been changed at 5438 ( I have them print it out for my records). The truck now has 7500 miles and the indicator came on today.
Does it somehow monitor the oil color, thickness. etc or does it just use some programming to determine when it thinks it needs to change. In other words, the computer doesn't know they did an oil change early and thinks it is still the same oil for the past 7500 miles?

It's an algorithm based on a number of factors such as operating temps, hours, mileage, etc. It doesn't analyse the oil, you have to reset the OLM when you change oil. My guess is they didn't. How to do that is in your manual.
I have 10k on my truck now and the change oil light seems to be coming on right around four thousand miles. Not real sure why as I drive pretty conservative and the diesels I have had in the past that measure oil life have always come on around 8k to 10k???

There are six inputs used by the PCM. The factors which indicate severe use (and a shorter oil change interval) for each of these inputs are listed below:
• Ambient temperature – extended periods of low temperature operation
• Average vehicle speed – stop and go driving
• Engine run time – prolonged idling
• Trip length and coolant temperatures – short trips
• Engine speed and load – trailer tow usage
• Flex-fuel percentage – ethanol percentage of more than 60%
Based on this information, at a fixed number of miles since the last reset of the system, the PCM calculates the combined effects of these variables to determine if a severe usage pattern exists. If severe usage is determined, the oil change message is activated at 4000 kilometers; otherwise, the message is not displayed until additional mileage has accumulated.
It should be noted that this system cannot keep track of dusty conditions or time elapsed since the last oil change (calendar time). In fact, it is possible for the maximum allowable maintenance time interval to elapse without an oil change reminder being displayed. In such a case, it is the responsibility of the owner to change the oil based on the recommended interval.
