Dash Cam
I have been looking into them for quite some time. They could be incredibly valuable if you ever have an incident where a lawsuit may be an issue.
After reading a bunch of forums and reviews it seems as thought people have all reached the conclusion that the cheaper models are far better then the models that cost hundreds of dollars. I had looked into the Blackvue models assuming that based on their price that they must be the best. But it seems that most people claim they are have issues with heat and cold and that the added cost is not justified. It's also talked about on many forum that you do NOT want a dashcam that records your speed. Unless of course you ALWAYS drive the speed limit. You will just end up making more problems for yourself if you tried to use the footage to defend yourself and it shows you speeding.
The general consensus is that you need decent quality footage to show you were not at fault if and when an incident occurs. You are not trying to shoot HD video to post on your website as a movie. So their is no need to seek out HD models that have broadcast quality video. Got on YouTube and watch the countless number of dashcam video's and realize how having HD is not important. All that really matters is that they record at least on a 10 minute loop and are easy to setup and start recording automatically. Many reviews pointed towards a model that cost well under $50.00. It's called the G1W. My friend has had one for over a year with zero issues.
The only reason i have yet to buy one is i have not gotten around to figuring out where to tap the positive from a switched ignition source. I currently have a mirror tap for my radar detector and was thinking i could just tap off of that. But i'm not sure if the camera will overload the circuit for the mirror and radar detector.

This is the one I got (I actually just bought another one for my wifes car). It's even cheaper now. Bought a 32 G SD card for it. Mine is set to record 3 minute loops. Once the card is full, it starts overwriting the oldest file. It's pretty much plug and play. My outlet turns off with the car, so I just leave it plugged in all the time. As soon as I start the car, it starts recording on it's own

The reason to get a high res camera is to catch the license plate if someone decides to flee the accident, you are less likely to be able to decipher the license plate of a moving target with a low res camera. Even less so at night.
So get the highest resolution camera you can afford.
