Looking at a 2012 Sport - Some Questions
Hi all. I sold my '06 Ram 1500 in September of 2014, but I have been missing having a pickup, and have definitely been missing the Hemi. So I've started looking at Rams again. A few 2012 crew cab Sport editions have caught my eye, but I wanted to get some feedback from owners first.
First, what major issues do the 4th gens have? Is there anything specific I should look for if I go to look at one?
Second, are the rear fenderwells on the 4th gens notorious for rust issues as they are on the 3rd gens? That was a big reason I got rid of my '06. Both rear fenderwells started to rust pretty bad, so I did some patchwork "rust prevention", put some flares on it, then sold it. There were other reasons I sold it, but they weren't related to the truck itself.
My '06 was definitely the most fun truck I have ever driven. Although leveling the front end and putting 34's on it made the mpg's absolutely horrible. I probably won't be doing the same thing if I end up getting a 4th gen. Thank you in advance for responses.

Rust will still be an issue as they did nothing to fix it. Exposed edges of sheet metal. On my 2011 sport the rear painted bumper rusted extremely quickly on the underside. Now, at 63K miles, the outside is rusting around the parking sensors. Paint bubbled up and flaked off. Since it isn't a "perforation" or rusted through, the warranty won't cover it.
Other than that, no other issues.

I havnt seen any Gen4 with box rust issues (Like in Atlantic Canada, We use TONS of salt) But it all is how they are kept. I paid the dealer extra $$ for a top of the line undercoating. But when I looked at the boxes before, they still seem to be built the same way as older dodge/ram trucks.
I love my 2015 with the Hemi, Had a Dakota with V6 so big step and love it.

Thank you for the replies. I'm going to do some more research on on these. It seems like most of the Rams I see in my area have the same rust issues that I had with my '06, so I'm a little hesitant to buy another one.
