real life towing capability help needed.
hello, I need some advise from the towers out there. I currently have a 2012 dodge ram 5.7lt v8 hemi 4x4 truck. I am about to be starting a lot of traveling soon MO to TX then up to Alaska. I am looking for a camper I can comfortably live out of for 6 months and my truck can safely pull. the camper I am looking at has a GVWR of 6600 lbs, (real life would be closer to 61-630lbs when towing) according to the ram towing guide my truck can tow 8500lbs (I don't know the axle ratio so I'm going with the lower one.) I'm sure my truck will have no problem pulling or stoppng that weight on flat ground, but any advise on going through the mountains with that type of load? I will be Installing a trailer break assist and a WD hitch, and anti sway bars on it as well.
Before you start,if you haven;t already, service the tranny, filter fluid misc adjustments. This comes with warranty in case problems arise. The n in the hills, TURN OFF OD.the tranny will thank you.Perhaps fuel filter as well and tune up,With the miles you will be doing ,trouble free as much as possible with pre-trip.Just a thought.......................
you should be ok with that camper and tow equipment. just make sure to get the tongue weight within the right percentage. I am guessing your truck did not come with a tow package so you might have to add and external tranny cooler or some sort of additional cooling for your transmission. When i hit the tow button on my 2011 it puts it in gear selection "5", don't know if you tranny is the same as mine but as indicated above, no overdrive. I haul a 24 foot RV (around 6k fully loaded) with a WD hitch ( i have the anti sway but have not used it yet) without any probs, just dial the WD hitch as per instructions as you don't want it too tight and definitely not too lose. for sure you need a brake assist. never done any mountain towing but just research it and good luck.
Axle ratio is important. My 2013 Sport Hemi, 4x2 with 3.55 was rated to tow 6800lbs. I think the same ratio in ST trim is rated at about 8800lbs. The only difference that I can determine is the springs so I added air bags to the rear springs and with my 25’ travel trailer, I never had an issue. Towed up a 7500’ mountain in NM and the engine and trans temp gauge never moved higher than normal. Now I have a ‘17 Big Horn 4x4 Hemi with 3.92 ratio and with those same air bags my max tow weight should be about 10,600lbs.
P.S. I love Ram trucks!
