Default Lifetime Warranty and modding

Hello all,

New here, but have been in a Ram of some sort or another for the past 10 years. I drive a lot for work, 800-1000 miles per week, and was driving a Cummins powered truck. The mileage was great but mainly I was after longevity of the engine. The same still applies, but what really got into the 09 Ram was the lifetime powertrain warranty. The warranty seems to be pretty easy to understand, not a lot of fine print, but we are limited to only using MOPAR accessories. I imagine performance goodies are going to be limited to cold air intakes and Cat back exhaust. Back in the old Magnum engine days, MOPAR would release Performance ECM's, do they do that for the Hemi's? What about downloaders, do they all leave a trace? I would imagine that they do, all but one of the diesel programmers left a trace.

As much as I would like to go to town with forced air induction, cam, bigger injectors, etc. I kinda of want to keep the truck long enough to see how well they stand behind this Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. Hell I even went ahead and got the wrap so everything is covered, unless it is made of rubber (tires, hoses, and belts) or is a brake pad.

Anyway, glad to be here. I like being one of a handful who is driving an 09, but I look forward to there being more and more guys like me with a great truck.

Bill

If you buy Mopar stuff you are safe.

Any non-Mopar, if they can prove it caused or was part of the reason for the failure of their part they will not honor the warranty.

With superchips unistalling the program before bringing it in has never caused any waranty issues.

and they havent said anything about K&N and they cant blame an airintake on anything unless it overheats the engine because it wasnt installed properly.

As for exhaust well find out when my 09 goes in the shop to have the passenger side knuckle replaced,

aparently your not supposed jump sand dunes like in the commercial I bent my knuckle so now I beleive those dodge commercials were false advertising ( BTW it was worth the 600 dollars for the 5 seconds 5 feet of hang time).

Question for minatorhemi8
What kind of exhaust did you put on? I'm waiting to hear what others are doing before I add a system to my '09. Worried about the sound with MDS.

A stndard flowmaster I think its the 44 series, I just got the muffler but I had to pay extra because some genious at dodge decided "hey lets put the muffler vertical instead of horizontal" so i had to pay extra for the stock pipes to be redirected.

Do you have any problem with lousy/irritating sound when cruising and the MDS cuts in?
Thanks for the reply.

Just a few points. No programmer is untraceable. If you have a programmer and it causes problems and you take it off before you take it in for warranty repairs, it can be found and you are cheating the system. If you add performance modifications that are not approved by Dodge and problems arise, it is not fair to expect to get these repairs fixed for free. You knew the risk and you assumed the risk..

Adding a CAI (K & N or whatever) is not an approved modification and is considered to be tampering with noise control systems and any problems caused by this action is not a warranty issue.

Why do people think it is OK to add unapproved modifications that cause damage and then expect it to be covered under warranty.

Some info from the warranty manual.......

But your warranties don’t cover any part that was not
on your truck when it left the manufacturing plant or is
not certified for use on your truck. Nor do they cover
the costs of any repairs or adjustments that might be
caused or needed because of the installation or use of
non-DaimlerChrysler parts, components, equipment,
materials, or additives.
Performance or racing parts are considered to be
non-DaimlerChrysler parts. Repairs or adjustments
caused by their use are not covered under your
warranties

3.6 Other Exclusions
Your warranties don’t cover the costs of repairing
damage or conditions caused by any of the following:

• abuse or negligence;
• misuse — for example, driving over curbs or
overloading;
• tampering with the emission systems, or with
a part that could affect the emission systems

Owner's Warranty Responsibilities:

As the truck owner, you should also be aware that
DaimlerChrysler may deny your warranty coverage if
your truck or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect,
improper maintenance or unapproved modifications.

C. Tampering with Noise Control System
Prohibited
Federal law prohibits the following acts or the causing
thereof:
• the removal or rendering inoperative by any person,
other than for purposes of maintenance, repair, or
replacement, of any device or element of design
incorporated into any new vehicle for the purpose of
noise control prior to its sale or delivery to the
ultimate purchaser or while it is in use; or
• the use of the vehicle after such device or element
of design has been removed or rendered inoperative
by any person.
EMISSION WARRANTIES REQUIRED BY LAW

Among those acts presumed to constitute tampering
are the acts listed below:
AIR CLEANER
• removal of the air cleaner;
• inverting the air cleaner lid; or
• removal of the air ducting.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
• removal or rendering inoperative exhaust system
components including the muffler or tailpipe.
ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM
• removal or rendering inoperative the fan clutch; or
• removal of the fan shroud.
