Oil
The MDS requires that you use 5W-20. That is pretty thin stuff in the summer, but today's oils are very good. Because of tight tolerances in modern engines, some people think that thinner allows better lubrication in these tight places.
I change my oil every 5000 miles and have for the last 35 years with no sludge problems at all. After 100K miles, everything is still very clean. I usually use various mineral based oils that are on sale, but name brand.
I think that one of the best oils for the money right now is Motorcraft Synthetic blend. It is made by Conoco-Phillips. Is synthetic worth the price, probably not in these low rpm engines. In my race 4 stroke motorcycle engines, I use pure synthetic because it has no viscosity enhancers added to it that quickly break down. I also don't want any moly in it. The bike has totally different needs than your truck engine.
If you want the very best protection, use a by pass filter system like Amsoil with theirs or any synthetic. It will filter to 2 microns, paper full flow filters only filter to about 20 microns.
If using full flow filters, I think the motorcraft 820S in the best because of the front location of the bypass valve. Most other brands place the bypass in the top of the can. If the bypass is ever used, dirt will be washed off of the paper media into the engine.

I've used nothing but Mobil One for the last 15 years and had no problems. I only have 2200 miles on the new ram but will be using the 5W-20 Mobil when the time comes. I don't really know about hi rev or low rev I only know that I drove my 99 QC for over 200 miles with 1 qt of oil in it before I realized it was that low. I didn't really notice because I got no reaction from the truck, this is before I fixed the plenum leak problem, but the truck never overheated, never felt sluggish, never had an indication of a low oil condition. After this I knew using Mobil or any quality full synthetic oil was the only way to go. Due to the cost of this oil though I am changing one thing and that is I will start running the oil for 5000 miles, but will be changing the filter at 2500 mile intervals. I have been using AC filters only, read a few bad things about Fram so quit using them. Would love to use the Amsoil filters but a little to pricey for me. Jeff.
Royal Purple I have heard that this is what the companys that make motor oil use in their company trucks , they dont even use there own products. i havent used it it is expensive... but the people i hear that use it love it. Has any one else heard of it?
