Default turning off mds

I know in tow mode it is supposed to be locked out but a friend of mine at work has a Charger Daytona that has the center shifter, On his if u ratchet the shifter till it says 5 and leave it there instead of 1 more were it is blank he said it will not go to MDS, My truck doesn't have an indicater to tell me if its working or not, I understand that if u have aftermarket exhaust u can hear it change so I was going to see if someone would try this, also if u have a coloum shift can u still shift 1 thru 5 manuelly?
