now where is the fun in that?
My hope is that all the time that i spend on this problem will pay divedends for me and others looking to replace their head units....time will tell :-)

ok, now for the next update....after some tooling around, i was able to verify that it was the pac unit causing these issues, beyond a doubt. thier initial fix of jumping the ground wire oddly made things FAR worse. thier new fix was to do both the ground and the 12v (the one that is on the opposite side of the harness). it has been 24 hours since i did the fix, and it hasn't happened yet! so i will continue to wait and see what happens. I even resisted the urge to use wire taps, and instead stripped the insulation away from the wire and soldered the jumper wire in place.

i am still witing for the SWI from pac and i also need to get the antenna adapter too, and after all that is done, i will probably start working on getting some subs in place

anyone else have an install story to share?

Did your troubles go away permanently? I just picked up my truck today with the base radio installed. I am going to attempt to install my AVIC Z2 (updated to a Z3). Do you have any pictures of the trimming you did to both the metal and plastic behind the bezel?

yes, all of the troubles went away as soon as i permanently connected the 12v yellow lead and the ground wire to the PAC unit. I kept the connections in the harness connected as they were and just stripped a little insulation from both sides and put a thick jumper wire in. I haven't had a problem since.

as for the trimming, no i did not take any photos. my advice is to use a dremel tool and a few multi-purpose cutting bits. Best advice i can give you is to take your time and position yourself where you are nice and stable and have a good grip on the dremel. i broke 2 bits and was putting way too much pressure on the dremel. I was lucky and didn't slip into anything but i really could have been a lot more patient and achieved the same results safer.

 

oh, and i will add this: i can't get the stock subwoofer removed, so i just stopped trying. the speaker itself is bolted from underneath and there must be bolts holding in the enclosure that i can't see.......if anyone gets the sub out, let me know :-)

 

Anyone know if the PAC C2R-CHY4 is compatible with our trucks?

I have the base radio. The PAC site says it is, but every retailer's website shows only through 2008. However, they all list it as compatible with the 2009 Journey.

 

Answering my own question... Yes, the PAC C2R-CHY4 is a perfect match with our trucks. Reverse, VSS, everything worked great. I also added the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel interface box. It works flawless as well. Took me about 3 hours to cut out enough room for the Pioneer Z2, but well worth the effort.

Anyone know where to pick up switched 12vdc power near the back of the truck for backup camera power? I tried the hitch plug, but it's hot even with the key off....

a bit off topic... do you remember which wire was the power wire to the hitch? i am going to tap into that to power my under rail bed lights.
