Default clamp on exhaust tip?

So, having a single exhaust without a shiny tip, I ordered a nice clamp on tonight. Question is, should I leave the stock tailpipe full length and cover it completely with the tip, or should I shorten the stock tailpipe, but leave enough meat for the clamp? I've always cut the pipes shorter on these things, but have heard of people leaving them full length and covering. Pros/cons?

Forgot to mention, the tip is a magnaflow clamp-on rolled edge slash. 3" inlet, 4" outlet 12" length. I saw a 16" tip with the same dimensions on a 2009 quad, and it looked like it was too long for me. The one I ordered looks right in my head, and the magnaflow clamps look bulletproof compared to most clamp ons out there.

Hack off the mini muffler/resonator first, then clamp in on!

I would mount it without cutting and see what it looks like. If it sticks out too far, then cut the pipe.

Just make sure you have a welder, pipe, and can weld/swell on your own. Or just take it to a shop

Update on this. I did not cut the tailpipe. Slip fitted it, and the stock pipe is only visible if you look directly down the end of the tailpipe, even so it's hard to see because of the hard slash in it. So, I just left it intact mainly because I'm lazy more than anything.

I got magnaflow clamp on tip part number 35212. I liked this one due to it's clamp design, it is a beefy muffler clamp welded to the tip. super solid, and I liked the size as well. The clamp bolt is only seen if you are underneath looking for it. 12" long, 3" inlet, 4" OD. Looks perfect to my eye. Not too big, and covers the stock tip perfectly without sticking out too far. Just need the muffler to go with it now.

That is a simple, but good looking upgrade.

I like the look of this. I was thinking of ordering the Mopar OEM chrome tip, its also 3" ID and 4" OD but its 14" end to end. I am wondering now if its going to be slightly too long and stick out too much
