I should also mention that I have changed gears on a few other vehicles over the years.

A Ford F350 with a 460 ci and auto trans; 4.56 gears and anywhere from 36" to 39.5" tires, was geared too tall for optimal use on the highway.

A Jeep Cherokee with 4.56 gears and 33" tires; perfect for highway use with its overdrive suto trans.

A Jeep CJ-5 with a Chevy V-8, a three speed non-overdrive auto trans, 4.56 gears, and 35" tires; pretty decent on the highway, but limited by lack of an overdrive gear.

A 1/2 ton Chevy pickup with 4.10 gears and 35" tires; acceptable, but a tad too tall geared for best highway performance.

A Toyota Tacoma with 4.56 gears and 33" tires; perfect for highway use with the supercharged V-6 and auto trans.

Also, ... consider that Dodge puts 4.56 gears in their Power Wagon truck, which comes with 33" tires.

so are you saying that with 35's and mostly highway use the 4.88 would be the best or the 4.56???

 

also remember tires dont always measure what they say on the sidewall,they usally run a little smaller also after they are installed on the vehicle the weight of the vehicle will lower the actual diameter of the tire for example my 39.5" tires on my play truck actually measure 38",my 33"bfgs measured approx 31.5" on my old truck the 33s on my old 02 ford had 3.55 gears w/4sd auto they were a little under geared would of loved to have had at least 3.73 but preferably 3.92 or 4.10.but as far as the 35s go 4.56 should be perfect all around gear ratio for fuel economy,power,everyday driver

 

There is not much difference between those two gears, and I think either would work fine. For highway driving in the mountains, and/or towing, I think 4.88s would be good when combined with the overdrive transmission we have in these trucks. For more flat land driving 4.56s would be a good choice.

If I were chosing a gear for my Jeep wiith 35" tires I would definitely chose 4.88s, no doubt about it. For the truck with 35" tires I think 4.56s would be preferred, simply because the truck has another 200 HP under the hood. But the 4.88s would also be acceptable for the truck.

 

Maybe i wont be going with 4.88's, i think the biggest they make for our front is 4.56

 

Well there you have it then, ... get 4.56's. Thanks for the info, I didn't know the 4.88s were not available for our trucks front diff.
