Angry Grinding/Ratcheting Noise when Shifting into Reverse

So this started happening yesterday, but when I shift into reverse, from park, it makes a grinding or ratcheting noise for a second or two. It happens on a flat surface, incline and decline. If I shift back into park and back into reverse a few times it does it every time but it gets shorter. Then if I go from drive to reverse it does not happen. I have 3,400 miles.

Any ideas on what this could be?

no idea, the only ratcheting noise i get is going into 4lo but that's normal. I'd get it checked out your tranny might have problems finding reverse from park. Sometimes when i shift into reverse from park it doesnt engage even though the evic says it is, i have to shift into park and back into reverse for it to engage

Well, if it doesn't magically fix itself and go away, I'll be taking the truck in for this and the seat issue. Maybe I'll be due for an oil change by then and able to knock out 3 things together.

I kinda thought they would have fixed that by now. My 99 Durango and 00 Dakota did that, too. When in park the trans pump is not pumping, or rather it's on a bypass circuit. There is a check ball in the valve body that tends to vibrate and rattle against the separater plate as the fluid pressure rises when shifting from Park to Reverse since there is no pressure behind it in Park. Once the pressure builds to a certain point, the ball seats in its hole and the noise goes away. At least, that's what we found with my other two trannys. Chrysler actually had a TSB where the steel check ***** were replaced with hard plastic ***** because they were tearing up the separator plates.

This all assumes we're talking about the same noise, of course. The best description I heard was this sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel coming to a stop. If this is, in fact, the problem I don't believe there is a fix without redesigning how the tranny works. At least, they've applied enough Band-Aids so it isn't doing any real damage.

I would just take it to service as long as you can simulate that noise there. Don't wait for it to go away, the sound may go away but underlying problem most likely won't. Thus take it to service asap.

Default Grinding/Ratcheting Noise when Shifting into Reverse Reply to Thread

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem, this is a post that pretty much is identical to my vehicle. it sounds like a deck of cards in a bicycle wheel when you throw it into reverse and the dealer cant find anything wrong with it, but its never done this before. its an 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Big Horn with Hemi and Tow package. Anyone else know of anything? I checked TSBs nothing on it at all or recalls.

any help would be great!

Your issue is not normal, I would take it in as soon as possible to let the service guys hear and see the problem while it still exists.
