09 SLT Quad cab sport - shakes when only rear windows down
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue?
It's an 09 Sport SLT Model, Quad Cab.
If i'm driving at 50 km/hr (30ish mph for those in the US) and decide to put ONLY the rear windows down, i get this horrible shake from the truck. so horrible that the air in the truck causes a headache. now, it isn't as bad if i only put one window down at a time, or if i open the sliding window on the box window, but it is still unbearable.
I am also getting the classic squeak/creak in the passenger seat, and that will be fixed when i take the truck in for its first tune up.
right now it has 8300ish KM (5000ish miles). i've plugged my VIN into the dodge recall list, but it says there is nothing there for recalls. maybe i will get the dealership to have a look - as i'm in canada and it took me to the usa site.
Thanks everyone!

The effect is commonly referred to as "helicoptering", although some people have other terms for it. It's very common in most cars (my X5 does it, My Silverado does it, and previous 4 doors I have had did it as well). You might try reading the owner's manuals- I am pretty sure Dodge refers to it specifically.
Nothing can be done about it, except open the sunroof or a front window slightly. It's not a defect, it's just aerodynamics.

Hint: Using the front windows and center back window, instead of the back door windows, will noticeably improve your MPH.
(It's remarkable how much of a "parachute" effect a quad cab can have... It really shows that aerodynamics are real...)

Do you mean MPG?
This is a phenomenon that is apparently so prevelant in the Ram 1500 4-doors, that Dodge has included it in the owner's manual.
They refer to it as "Wind Buffeting" and they too refer to it as a "helicopter-like" popping sound.
Until I finally associated it with rolling the back windows down in my Quad Cab 4X4, I thought there was some kind of a "transfer drive" malfunction underneath and took it to the dealer.
They had no clue and sure as heck didn't tell me about the wind buffeting.
So I combed over the manual some more and finally noticed the entry, recommending I minimize it by rolling down other windows.
I would guess in some trucks it's worse than others - in my 2009 1500 4x4 Quad SLT SB, it is so loud, the passenger seat up front shakes, (imagine what that does to your head.)
This occurs when the speed reaches about 45 mph. I have the sliding rear window but opening it doesn't help. I need to also crack the front window(s).
Since there are times I do not want the front passenger windows open, I have decided to give the side window wind guards a try (MOPAR OEM also known as rainguards tinted or clear). Anything that will impede the aerodynamic flow over the cab may help. So I have been to two Dodge dealers here in San Diego and have looked at 3 MOPAR accesories stores on line. They all inform me that, even though my truck is a 2009, they are all out of stock and are having to special order them - up tp 3-4 weeks.
3-4 weeks for window guards on a recent model vehicle!!??? This is a commonly ordered item. So why are they out of stock? Because the wind buffeting on the Ram is so prevelant and because Dodge does not have a fix for it, they are not informing you nor are they coming up with a solution - hence good luck getting your window guards sometime soon.
