The 5.7L Eagle engine is equipped with Variable Cam Timing (VCT).
Changes for the 5.7 L Multiple Displacement System Engine Monday, 13 October 2008 16:21 Due to software changes on the 5.7L MDS engine, the following is coming soon:
The 5.7L Eagle engine is equipped with Variable Cam Timing (VCT). This system advances and/or retards the camshaft timing to improve engine performance, mid-range torque, idle quality, fuel economy, and reduce emissions. The VCT assembly is sometimes referred to as a camshaft phaser.
CAUTION: Never attempt to disassemble the camshaft phaser, severe engine damage could result.
The VCT assembly consists of the camshaft sprocket and a timing phaser. The VCT phaser assembly bolts to the camshaft and is serviced as an assembly.
- New 2009 MY CPOS packages for all vehicles with the 5.7L MDS engine.
- New sales code for MDS engine (EZH) ; old engine code was (ESD)
- Same engine description “5.7L V8 Hemi MDS VCT engine”
- There is no price change for this engine (EZH)

awesome, finally an answer to our 5.7l engine questions, I wonder when the new engine started production and if there's any major downfalls to have the first production 5.7's
Im not 100% sure but I would bet the software changes they made were the fuel saver light , that may be the only differnce in the vct or vvt , its funny cause when you click on vvt info in my book it goes into vct so that tells me that the engine is totaly the same , Im going to email some guys I know at the factory and see if I can get anymore info on this subject , I own a vct enegine with no fuel saver light , I bet soon they will update software and add that to those vct trucks if that happens I will let you guys know of that update.
My truck has the hemi VCT (based on build sheet and window sticker info) and I do not have the fuel saver light. If I remember correctly the build date was November 08. Not sure there is a connection between having the fuel saver light and VCT or VVT

The Hemi engine is built in Mexico and the 09 1500 Rams were built in two plants in the US, one in St. Louis, MO and the other in Warren, MI (Detroit). The reason some people have fuel saver lights on November build dates and others don't is because of logistics in getting the changes implemented into both plants. Although I believe the fuel saver light change was simultaneous to the VCT change in St. Louis, I do not think it was simultaneous in Warren.
