Default Spectre filters, any good?

My father in law suggested that I get a Spectre brand performance filter for the Ram based on his experience and price of the filter. He paid $20 for the filter to put in his 3rd generation Dakota and swears his fuel mileage has increased by 3mpg. He says his driving pattern or route has changed since installing the filter. I am tempted to buy one and give it a try. The Spectre filter is comparable to its K&N counterpart but is less expensive. I looked on the Spectre site and they list the 2009 part number as 889401. From what I see it is the same for the 4.7 and 5.7. What do you guys think? I have used K&N before but used it based solely on the idea of increasing power rather than fuel mileage.

I know some of Spectre's other stuff is on the cheap side.

I don't know about their air filters.
