When to use Tow/Haul mode?

Could even be handy when using your trailer to destroy your banks drive through roof like this fine Ram owner demonstrates

But does it actually run in 4th gear? I have a hard time with that one, maybe I'm wrong.
I used it the other night, I only went up like 300 rpms while cruising. Does it just keep the Torque converter locked in instead? It says 5 on the EVIC and when i manually downshift, I hit all 5 gears. I know the T/H is working because it does the higher longer shift points.

This transmission has a total of six forward gears, with two of them considered 2nd. When you use the tow/haul function, it uses both 2nd gears and eliminates the second overdrive. The easiest way to see this is to drive down the interstate at a given speed and RPM, 70 and 1650 in my case. Then push the tow/haul button. Give it a few seconds to settle in because it jumps directly into 4th (1:1 ratio) before going into the first overdrive known as (5th in tow/haul). You RPMs should now be about 3-400 higher than before you engaged tow/haul.

I found some more info on tranny and tow/haul mode I wanted to share..
Transmission type 5454RFE 5-speed automatic
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1/1.50:1
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.75:1
5th 0.67:1
Reverse 3.00:1
Axle ratio 3.55:1
Final drive ratio 2.38:1
Indicated rpm @ 60 mph 1500
Transfer-case model NVG246
Low-range ratio 2.72:1
Crawl ratio (1st x axle gears x low range) 29.0:1
A Tow/Haul mode is standard and is useful when towing. Activating Tow/Haul may take the truck out of top gear but it does not lock it out; you can still cruise in overdrive with tow/haul on. The Tow/Haul mode keeps the transmission cooler when towing by holding gears longer (and reducing hunting between gears) and shifting faster (and harder). - Motortrend

I too thought that it shifted into 5th gear based on the dash readout but that is incorrect thinking. 4th (which is still overdrive) is as high as it goes in Tow Haul but you do get 5 shifts since it uses the extra 2nd gear, hence the "5" on the dash. The difference between 4th and 5th is not that great so you really will not notice much of a difference.
Still recommend using Tow Haul when towing, especially on hilly terrain. Eases the load on the tranny.

Better go read it again, you're incorrect. Normal operation, 1-2 are underdrive, 3 is 1:1, and 4-5 are both overdrives. In tow/haul, 1-3 are underdrive, 4 is 1:1, and 5 is overdrive. ERS 5 is normal 4th.
