Leer vs SnugTop - and wiring for keyless entry
I am debating between a Leer 100XQ and a SnugTop SuperSport cap for our 09 Ram 1500.
There are a few specific things that I need some feedback on, as follows. Hopefully someone has experience with these caps to give me some direction :-)
I really like the SnugTop, and am trying to convince myself that it will work for us better than a Leer ;-)
We are wanting to put a cap on our truck so that we can crate the dogs in the bed and not have anyone mess with them/shelter them from the elements on trips in both hot and cold climates. So ventilation is a big thing for hot weather.
1. Leer has a removable front window option that allows the entire window to come out. This means we have a big opening in the front to assist in ventilation. The SnugTop doesn't have this. Does anyone know if there is a way to convert it ourselves? Or how difficult it is to remove the entire window assembly for the summer?
2. The Leer 100XQ has the full length window that tilts open at the back, meaning there is ventilation going all the way along, getting rid of some of the stagnant air toward the back of the bed. I don't really know how to solve the stagnant-air issue with a SnugTop - any suggestions? I am hoping that pulling out the whole back window would solve that issue.
3. The Leer is able to wire into the factory keyless entry system, but the SnugTop comes with a bulky key with its own remote built into the key. The SnugTop dealer told us that he has tried to get the SnugTop keyless entry to work with the factory keyless, and wasn't able to do it. It seems like it would be pretty straight forward to tap into the wire that releases the passenger door lock and have that trigger the lock on the cap as well. But, I don't know how the 09 Ram's are wired. Has anyone tried this or does anyone know whether this would work?
4. Has anyone installed an electric door lock conversion into the tailgate lock? It would be nice if EVERYTHING could be locked and unlocked with the factory remote, including the tailgate. Ideas?
Thanks guys!

Mopar sells a powered kit for your tailgate lock. So it is possible to wire in a solenoid to the keyless entry. The connections are made up front under the fuse box. There is a big thread on here with detailed pictures.
Thanks!
We ended up going with the Leer. Functionally it was just better and required no modifications to make it do what we wanted it to do. The place we got it at gave us a good deal and will also be installing a keyless tailgate system for us, so that solves all our problems :-)

Maybe contact Pace Edwards and they might sell you the wiring kit? Or send u the schematics.
