Default 3.21 vs 3.55

Why do some of truck owners think that trucks with the 3.55 get better gas mileage? Unloaded and not pulling a trailer I would think the 3.21 would get the best mileage.
What do you guys think about this?
Thanks,
Jack

depends on the geography in your area. If you have no hills then the 3.21 will do better, but if you live in an area that has several hills then the 3.55 will do better since it will be able to handle hills better without shifting to 4th gear to maintain speed. Its all relative and has been beat to death, in the end it is your choice as to which you get. I went with the 3.55 since I pull trailers often but I didn't need the 3.92 rear end since most of the trailers weigh around 3k to 5k pounds.

highway yes, around town, I don't think so, from the reports around the forums. Steeper gears, = less strain to get the truck to move = less gas used, don't know 3.21's myself

Not tyring to be critical, but I think you have it backwards. Steeper / Taller gears = more strain, less RPM pre given speed

less gas pedal action or quicker time to get to the same speed would be a better wording i guess
