Is not the 3.7 a 4.7 with 2 less cylinders? For a dialy driver, light work truck you will be okay, But, the last patriot I drove with the 3.7 and automatic was well, kinda gutluss, I curse dodge for no longer offering manul transmissons on trucks, to put it in better perspective a 4.7 is not going to cost that much more or use any more flue than the 3.7, for a light duty 2 wd a 4.7 will hold what little resale vaule thier is on trucks better than a V6

I've got a 3rd gen, it's not bad w/ a manual tranny but w/ the automatic it's a dog. The tranny they use leeches a lot of the power that the v6 has, so I'd get the 4.7 or the hemi as your mileage will be about the same as the v6 w/ those. Do a search there are guys who have them but I wouldn't recommend one since they stopped putting manuals in them.

EDIT: cyclone beat me to the punch, but you get the message.

I had to do a bunch of stuff to get a little power out of my 3.7. I added true duel exhaust with magniflow mufflers,K&N Cold Air intake and a Jet chip. It runs pretty good now with add ons but when it was stock,it was a real dog. I have never seen better than 19.5 MPGs and when it was stock the best I could get was 18 MPGs. This is on a 2006 Dakota Extended cab. I did the same exact thing on a 2002 Ram reg. cab 3.7 auto. and they both had the same results. Except on the 02 Ram I couldn't run true duels because of the stock single setup. But they changed the design in 06 to where you could do it. Like I say,the 3.7 with the add ons runs pretty darn good now but from what I hear the hemi gets about just as good MPGs with tons more power. That's why I just traded my Dakota in on a new Hemi!

At least get the 4.7, even in a Liberty the 3.7 is pretty sluggish

I would get a 4.7 for the simple fact that the MPG would be the same and I don't think it'll cost very much more than the 3.7.

In fact, I heard the 3.7's actually get worse because people end up flooring them all the time.

Another bad thing is the 3.7's are coupled to a 4 speed as compared to the 5 speed for the 4.7 and 5.7.

i have an 02 reg cab long bed with a k&n intake a performance chip flowmaster single side out exhaust a level kit with 285 70 r17 synthetic everything remote start and im catching myself driving it more than my 09 crew cab i honestly think it has more stand up pwer than these new hemi rams less computer upgrades the hemi has way more power but my 02 shifts better and does what i want it to do without having to go thru the computer first. my v6 has around 100,000 mileson it no leaks no major repairs just ball joints and brakes its a great truck i'll get rid of it when it hits 300,ooo

The 3.7 is gutless. Keep in mind you will likely be getting passed by people on mopeds and bicycles. The company I worked for had a 3rd gen 3.7 and my personal vehicle was a hemi. I thought about bringing a brick to work with me and just setting it on the gas pedal of the work truck for the day. It was bar none the slowest vehicle I have ever driven.. I would get the 4.7

I had a 2003 4x2 reg cab ram with the 3.7L and thought it was sufficient for the job. If your just riding around and not towing or hauling a bunch, its decent. I can only imagine the 2009 are even better.

no disrespect meant trashman, but I find that hard to beleive. if that is the case you may need to take the crew cab to the dealer for service
