Let me say this when I bought my 09 it was during the Chrysler meltdown. I got a 29k Truck for under 20k, I did have some negative equity from my last truck and that is all that I lost on the new truck. I put cash down to offset the negative equity this time so I am not saying I am sitting pretty but I financed Quite a bit less then invoice.

I agree the 4.7 has plenty, but if you watch that towing video you might not be happy since you said it has the same power and torque and the strongest gas ford150? Well get it and the money you save wanting that exhaust and bumper you can buy the catback duals for the 4.7 and then either put it under the bumper or buy a new one with the slots. Cost ya as much as a HEMI but in the long run you will save on gas.

No, he won't. Read the rest of the thread.

I test drove both before I bought my truck. The salesman had a 4.7 with everything I wanted on it, and had to twist my arm to test drive it. I was really surprised by the power--I thought it was a great motor.

The hemi though. For the $, it was a no-brainer for me.

Default 4.7 vs 5.7

Horsepower is horsepower, a hemi will outdo a 4.7 in the top end.

A hemi may get 20 mpg on level roads on cruise control, but around town when the MDS is off all the time; the 4.7 gets a lot more.

We have a 2 2009 Hemi, and a 4 2009 4.7 in use. The empty Hemi averages around 18 to 19 on highway unloaded or not towing, and only 13 or maybe 14 around town. The 4.7 averages around 20+ on highway and 17 to 18 around town . This is the same driver for both trucks, on the same roads, with the same payload. Both trucks have a limited slip rear and the same trans.

These are not taken from the trip computers average fuel economy, but calculated at fillups over 2 weeks. We have to monitor fuel costs here.

That is not bull, its a fact. A Hemi can not get the same mileage as a 4.7 with same drive train. As you can tell by reading these forums, most people buy the Hemi to have a "faster" truck, and /or have the need for towing heavier.

As someone above said, "there is no substitute for cu displacement" or such. A big engine can not get equal or better mileage "OVERALL" than a small engine under the same drive train, driving habits, and payload as a smaller engine.

It's bennies are better towing if needed, and the MDS ; when it stays on".

Just my 2 cents of engine size.

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO CAUSE FLAMES< IT IS JUST AN OPINION OF MY DRIVERS AND I.

Default you have the wrong torque figs for the 5.7

Attachment 7691Here are the real figs from my dealer glossy. I think the one Dodge has on their website is wrong. I eyeballed these from the pic. Once I figure out how to do it, I will post the scan image.

RPM Torque
1600 340
2000 350
2500 370
3000 385
3500 400
3950 407

Hmm that is very interesting because the figures on the website are
much lower (what I posted). I can't believe they would mess
the torque chart up by that much. I have always heard that the downside to the hemi is low lowend torque.

Well, I've owned both. The first was an '09 w/the 4.7 and 3.55 gears. I traded that (with 2532 miles on it!) for my '09 R/T. There is no doubt about it. The Hemi, even w/the 4.10 gears, gets as good if not better mileage than the 4.7 did with the way I drive. The R/T will cause whiplash; the 4.7 took awhile to spool up, and was smoother in accelerating.

Default HP vs torque

I saw this same issue on other posts. The sanity check is to apply the torque to HP formula and see if the chart on the website makes sense. This formula says that Torque equals HP at 5252 RMP.

Power (hp) = Torque (ft-lb) * RPM / 5252.

So if you look at the power chart for the 4.7, the torque and HP curves cross at 5252 rpm but not for the 5.7.

Another clue is that for the 5.7, the claimed number on the top right chart for the 5.7 is 407 lb/ft of torque but the power chart only goes up to a little more that 375. I think that if one slides the torque curve up so that the HP and Torque curves cross at 5252 RPM then the numbers make more sense.

I owned a 2006 Dakota with the 4.7(I know, lower output than what is currently offered.) I hated the truck, so when someone pulled out in front of me and totaled it I jumped at the chance for a new Ram with the 5.7. I've had my 09 for a year now and I still can't get the grin off of my face when I'm driving it. The majority of us aren't buying trucks for the MPGs. If thats what I need then I'll drive the wife's Honda. 5.7 equals more SMILES PER GALLON.
