Bought a Superchips programmer today
I picked up a Superchips Flashpaq model 3865 at 4Wheelparts today. $340 across the counter, not a bad price. Took it home and invested about 45 minutes registering with Superchips and downloading the latest software. The software loaded OK but indication of progress/status is not overly clear and there is room for some improvement. Out to the truck and it took about another 20 minutes to download the stock tune. I skipped the 87 tune and uploaded the canned 91 tune. This part couldn’t be any simpler and Superchips did a great job here, very simple and straight forward. On to the drive and the first thing I noticed was crisper shifts with acceleration seeming more responsive from midrange on up. Torque management however is still very much apparent at the bottom - I did not notice much improvement off the line. Bear in mind I just loaded up the canned 91 tune without making any attempt to optimize anything. Still, I was expecting more so I went ahead and downloaded the 93 tune even though all I can get around here is 91. Holy CR*P, that’s the tune I was looking for!!! The front of the truck just floats up on the way to shift point and then bam it shifts hard around 6000RPM. It comes out of the shift like being launched on a giant rubber band! I could not believe the improvement, you will feel pressed back in the seat up to the shift and then get pushed back again coming out of it. The 93 tune was an awesome improvement in the mid range through upper RPMS. It also spools up much faster off the line as well but TM is still apparent. On the way back home I pulled up next to a Tundra DC at the light but when it turned green he didn’t make any attempt to run me (maybe he did the math in his head). Tomorrow I will try some of the advanced tune options but I am more than happy with it just the way it is…. and still grinning.
Ha haaa.....OK, but its gonna be tough because DC and CC Tundras are all I ever see around here. I thought there were programmers out for the Tundra's. If not I can't understand why, there seems a large base of them running around. I think even Titans have some after market programmers (or chips) and it seems like there's even less of them.
We have one tuner, but its a piggy back called Unichip. I got one with a custom tune, but it only messes with a/f ratio and timing. It cant do anything about transmission shift firmness or speed or take away TQ management. Still put down 320hp 346 tq on a mustang dyno after the custom tune on 91 octane, but Im sure diablo or super chips could do a little more with more features.
Even the titans have bully dog, superchips and uprev. I guess some tuners dont feel there is a big enough interest. But go on any Tundra forum and there is more than enough interest. Cab for Cab, a tuned titan with basic I/E will more than keep up with newer Hemi's and 5.7 tundras. 317 hp my but. lol. Glad they dont make a RCSB titan.

correct me if i am wrong but the 87,89 and 91 are they different tunes for octane levels. you are using these tunes with which octane gas? if your running the 91 tune with 87 octane your pushing your luck with the health of the engine yes/no
using a lower octane then what the tune calls for might cause some pinging. But if he is using the 93 tune on 91 octane and it works fine, then there might be some extra Hp available with custom tuning, only he would almost definetly need to use 93 then.

Good point - I cannot say for sure that I am doing anything bad yet. I decided to try the 93 tune and if I heard any pinging or noticed anything overtly bad going on I would just put it back to the 91 tune. So far I have heard absolutely NO detonation and all indicators are that everything is just fine. Now I do realize that there can be detonation one cannot hear and that my observations are hardly scientific. I am going to put it back to 91 and play with some of its other settings but I could not resist trying 93 and I'm glad I did! I make no claims as to suitablilty of running the 93 tune with 91 gas, I just wanted to share my initial results for those considering it. So far, my truck plays quite happily with it. Of course, others will have to judge for themselves and take their own chances accordingly.

you can't compete with that.
