Yet another gear question
Just wanted to get some opinions from those who have done a gear swap what a good brand would be.
I've got the 3.21's now with 2wd and want to switch to 4.10s with an lsd. A local off road shop near me said it would be about $1100 with a factory style lsd. I get the feeling that was with cheap parts.
My goals are not to be hitting the strip every weekend. I want something with the same driving habits as stock (smooth and quiet) just with a little more pep off the line and better traction when it's slick. About 90% of my driving is with a small utility trailer in tow (around 3.5k loaded) around town.
I've read a lot of people going with auburn or detroit truetrac lsd's and was wondering which one is a nicer street unit.
I'm not a fan of the 3.21's, I only get about 10.5-11mpg towing around town, 13mpg without towing, and usually only get about 16-17mpg highway @70mph unloaded.

Well the key is to find a shop that does ring and pinion work a lot like a 4 wheel drive shop, which you mentioned. You can get all the parts you need for about $800 then labor will be 3-400 for install. Moesperformance has a package w/ gears, master install and a DTT for about 800. Keep in mind it's best to get the parts through the shop doing the work in case there is an issue. I'm gonna say stay away from motive gears b/c I had a couple sets that had to be warrantied, even though lots of guys have them and haven't had any issues. Dodge has 4.10's for the 9.25 rear now since they put them in the R/T's, so that may be your best bet for good quiet gears but they will be more expensive. Both the DTT and the auburn are good units so I don't think you'll have issues w/ either one.

I'd back up the singing stance. I had 4 Wheel Parts install G2 OEM 4.10 gears and an Auburn LSD. The performance is great, but the rear end sings like a canary at anywhere near 50MPH. I'm still going around and around with them, but their stance is that "it's normal." I think they've screwed something up, but they're not helping me out at all.
As for Dodge/MOPAR OEM 4.10 gears, the best place to get them is mopardiscountparts.com, where they'll run you around $950 for the gear set alone. That's the cheapest I could find the OEM gears for.
