Exhaust experts thoughts on True Dual???
2010 1500 Laramie 4x4. I want true dual exhaust. I went to a local shop and the guy looked underneath my truck and said he could do it. Has anyone else done this yet? Does anyone foresee any problems in this?
I'm no expert but in talking to muffler shops regarding conversion of my single exhaust to duals, I've been advised that keeping a single main muffler is the way to go to avoid back pressure issues that will result in an MIL (malfunction light) or CEL (check engine light)
I was told by a Flowmaster Rep and a Custom Exhaust installer that true duals were a terrible idea because the Y pipe creates the pressure the computer in the engine reads and needs to operate properly.
I just had a Flowmaster 50 Series HD installed 3 inch single inlet 2.5 inch dual outlet and it sounds great.
I had true duals on my 1997 K1500 with the same size engine (5.7) and this new set up sounds WAY better plus it increased my MPG by 2.

I have heard from both sides, some say it works fine as long as you do not mess with the Cat and use an X or H pipe. There is a video of an 09 with true dual and it sounds awesome, but if it is gonna cause problems I don't want to do it.
Great sounding exhaust is a dual in dual out muffler. I set my buddies Ram up at the exhaust shop with a Imco Performance muffler, custom built two 2.5" pipes into the muffler and two out. Imco was bought out by CherryBomb, but they still make the muffler for cherrybomb. Its designed similiar to the flowmaster 50 series specifically for hemis. Sound is low while cruising, but when you get on it, sounds meannn. Total cost was $750 including muffler and nice tips. My buddy said he was normally getting 16mpgs on the fwy, but as soon as it was on drivin home on the fwy went up to 22mpgs, so the flow is excellent. Approx. 40% more exhaust flow.
I called and spoke to Flowmaster who says that the programing is the reason it is not a good idea for true dual, unlike the challanger, where the programming is diferent. They only recomend the 50 series HD for the Hemi truck. I decided to go with the 40 series 1 in 2 out, and replace the Y pipe with one less restrictive. This will be done this Saturday.
